Want your kid to go to a 4-year college?
Valley High School's AVID Program is one of the largest and most successful avid programs in northern California.
Closing the achievement gap and increasing the college-and career-going rate for underrepresented students is a significant policy dilemma. Increasing student opportunities, participation, and success in courses of high rigor will better prepare students for college and career success.
AVID- Advancement Via Individual Determination. The mission of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing ALL students for college and career readiness and success in a global society. The AVID program is designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. Although AVID serves ALL students, in secondary schools its first focus is on the least-served students in the academic middle. The formula is simple-raise expectations of ALL students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge!
AVID is a TK-12th grade support system that is research based and proven to increase student academic success. At the high school level AVID is an elective course that incorporates academic and social skills and targets the least served students. Students work together to problem solve, articulate what they don’t understand and learn how to seek out the resources they need. By teaching critical thinking, inquiry, and self-advocacy, students are empowered to own their learning. AVID students enroll in courses of high rigor, such as advanced placement classes, and receive support in the AVID elective class to be successful. Each year at Valley the vast majority of the Top Ten students with the highest-grade point averages are AVID students!
