PGHS AVID
Welcome to PGHS AVID
What is AVID? (Advancement Via Individual Determination) At the secondary grade levels (grades 6–12), AVID is an approved elective course taken during the school day. Students are asked to enroll in an AVID class after an application process. For one class period each day, they learn organizational and study skills, develop critical thinking by asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college and career success attainable. Students enrolled in AVID are encouraged to enroll in at least one of their school’s most rigorous academic classes, such as Advanced Placement or Honors, in addition to the AVID Elective. As students progress in AVID, their self-image improves, and they become academically successful students, leaders, and role models for other students. AVID students become part of a school family here at PGHS through: field days, tutorials, cookie exchanges, class celebrations, college tours, community service, field trips, movie nights, food fairs, and leadership opportunities. PGHS AVID reaches beyond the classroom!
Why AVID?
Graduating with a high school diploma does not guarantee admission to a four year college. AVID prepares students and provides them with the information and skills to get admitted and be successful when they get there. Each year over 90% of PGHS AVID seniors successfully complete A-G college admission requirements.
