Here you can find helpful links and resources to guide you through auditions, character study, technical roles, etc.
Q: Do I have to have experience in acting/ tech to be part of a show here?
A: Not at all! All experience levels are welcome and encouraged !!! We ask that you apply/ audition with a good attitude and do your best. If we feel you are right for a role, you are in! If you do not feel like auditioning or applying for crew, but still would like to be involved in the program, we always welcome extra helping hands!
Q: How do I stay up to date with all of the events, activities, and other information about Cardinal Theatre/ Drama Club?
A: The best way is by getting connected through "Band App". Our Cardinal Theater/ Drama Club group on "Band App" is the best and easiest place to go for announcements when they are posted! - Join code posted in the theatre classroom (k-9) and in our Drama Club/ Theatre google Classroom. In addition to this, we will often post flyers around campus and have announcements in the "Daily Dose of Cardinal News". When in doubt, come visit the theatre classroom and ask around :), we are happy to help.
Q: I am interested in tech. What tech roles are available for your productions (Cardinal Theatre) and what do I need to do if selected for one?
A: We are so glad you are interested in getting involved. To best answer this question, we made a slide deck on Google Docs that outlines each of the branches in tech, the roles that are within each tech branch and what each role does. If you have any additional questions, please visit the theatre classroom :). We hope this helps:)! ---> https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yq2WMHpLIWy60OkaSe6lN1rNQiRko6fj/view?usp=sharing
Q: What happens if I do not get cast?
A: The best thing to do is try to be kind and supportive of those who did get selected. Directors remember your kind attitude when casting future shows. If you REALLY want to be involved in any way, volunteer to help with the show (usher, set painting, publicity, etc.)! There are so many ways to get involved :).
Q: How should I prepare for musical auditions?
A: For musical auditions choose 16-32 bars of a song from an existing musical, that suits their vocal range. Please prepare your own accompaniment (acapella, performance track on your phone, etc.) and plan to sing accordingly. We will have you sing your selected song, and read an audition "side" from the script. Day 2 includes dance auditions where you will learn a brief dance combination & perform with the group.
Q: Do I have to bring a headshot/ resume to auditions?
A: Headshots & resumes are not required but always appreciated! (plus they tend to earn you some extra points in the audition room) ---- If you do not have a headshot/ resume but would like to create one for auditions, see the "audition materials tab" for some helpful tips & templates.
Q: How will I know if I have been cast/ given a crew position?
A: Cast & crew lists will be posted outside of K-9 at the school (over by the box office window). It will not be sent digitally. Join our Cardinal Theater/ Drama Club group on "Band App" for formal announcements when they are posted! - Join code posted in the theatre classroom
Q: What do I do if I don't want the cast/crew role I got & want a different one?
A: All cast & crew must sign the list to accept the role. If you decide you do not want the role that you have been given, you may resign within the week it is posted & your role will be given to someone else. If you don't want the role, you do not have to accept but do not expect to be offered a different/ "better" role. No diva moments here!
Q: Do only upperclassmen get cast in your shows?/ Can Freshmen get cast?
A: Casting/ crew positions are open to ALL grades!!! This is a program that welcomes all LC students! Casting is not dependent on your grade in school. Anything is possible, just bring your "A Game" and do your best!
Q: How do you select students for certain cast/ crew roles? What factors help you decide who gets what part?
A: Casting & crew assignments depend on a variety of factors and take a lot of thought. No casting or crew assignment is made lightly. As this is an educational theatre program, we strive to be as transparent as possible regarding this process, and have casting rubrics available should you desire feedback after your audition. Our goal is to always create a cast and crew dynamic that is welcoming, cohesive and very collaborative.
Some of the factors that go into casting decisions may include (but are not limited to) the following:
How might this student grow from this role/opportunity?
What strengths does this student exhibit that makes them a candidate for this role/job?
Does this student appear to be teachable/directable? Could they accept feedback as a positive and use it to fuel further creativity?
Is this student available (schedule-wise) and will they attend all rehearsals and performances reliably?
Is this student willing to make creative choices in the performance or tech position they are applying/auditioning for? What creative choices are displayed in the audition/tech application?
How does this student's performance/ characterization fit with their potential castmates?
Is this student able to balance the responsibilities of this role with their academic and school requirements? (ie: Are they passing their classes? Are they keeping their number of tardies low enough to stay off the "No Go List"? etc.)
