MYP Personal Project

The MYP personal project is an opportunity for freshmen and sophomores to complete a project of personal interest. Students should approach this project with a positive attitude towards something they have always wanted to learn. The more interesting the project is to students, the easier it will be to conduct the project. This page is designed to give students support in completing the project.

Freshmen Year

Towards the end of the freshmen year, students will begin brainstorming topics for their personal project. Use this worksheet to begin exploring ideas. Think about something you've always wanted to learn how to do or a problem you think needs to be solved.

sophomore year

  1. Students set a SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely) goal, write a proposal for a project and conduct research for the project. Students will also keep a journal in which they regularly record their research and outcomes. The journal can be a word document, a video, a blog or a written notebook.
  2. Students create an action plan and timeline for the project which is recorded in the journal. Students then take action on the project and complete it.
  3. Students write a final report on their personal project.

Library Support

The library research page on sources and source evaluation supports the student's search for sources when beginning the personal project.

Refer to our page on MLA format to format your final report accurately.

For the journal, students can use a variety of formats: Google word doc, written notebook or a blog. Use this free blogging site and sign in with your EGUSD Google drive.

supervisor meetings

Students will have three meetings with their supervisors (advocacy teacher). Document all three meetings on the Personal Project Academic Honesty Form which will be turned in with the project report.

Meeting #1: Review your project proposal and get the teacher's signature. Discuss the outcome/product of the proposal. Clarify and understand the process journal

Meeting #2: Review your research on your project. Review your plan to complete the project. Focus/refine your criteria for success.

Meeting #3: Turn in your project product, process journal and report. Be sure to submit your completed cover sheet and Academic Honesty Form to your supervisor.
