Identifying Gifted Abilities: Academic & Cognitive
GATE identification of these abilities are evaluated at different times during the year.
Academic eligibility is based on students’ state tests scores and their ranking among others in the same age group. This is calculated and tracked at the district level, not the site level. Students who meet this criteria are notified by mail in the fall each year. A student who meets two consecutive years at the highly advanced levels (95% and above) in English Language Arts or Mathematics in SBAC Assessments.
Cognitive eligibility is based on the results of the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT), which is a logical exam. This exam is given to all 3rd graders in the Elk Grove Unified School District each year. Middle school students who choose to take the test again to qualify for GATE, may make arrangements with the GATE coordinator. The NNAT is only administered in March at the middle school level.
*Both Academic and Cognitive eligibility for GATE Identification are done through the District's review of the aforementioned assessments. Based on the results, our student information system automatically selects students identified in these areas.
