Numeracy routines are designed to build number sense with students. These routines can be fit to all grade levels, changing content as appropriate. Routines typically take about 15 minutes, and can be done with an enVision lesson or outside of the math block, depending on your schedule. These routines all incorporate active participation and student talk.
A group of elementary and secondary CPL and EL coaches came together to identify the most common routines taught in our discourse cohorts. These methods are designed to encourage all students to engage in student talk and active participation during enVision lessons. To develop deep math understanding, it is important for students to engage in high quality tasks where they are constructing arguments, justifying their work, and critiquing the work of others. Teachers might consider using fewer problems from the enVision lesson, and spending their time using one or more of these methods on the most relevant problems.
