Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Resourceful
Dear Bobcat Families,
I hope you had a restful weekend and are ready for a strong week ahead.
This morning, I was joined on the announcements by Preston Wilmore, our guest announcer for the day. Preston brought great energy to the role and shared several thoughtful shoutouts to the people in his life, including Ms. Gipson, his friends in B Track, Harper, and Ms. Susie. It is always good to see students step into leadership and use their voice in a positive way.
This week at Batey includes several important events. On Tuesday morning, we will hold a fire drill at 9:00 AM as part of our ongoing school safety efforts. On Thursday, students will participate in Hip Hop classes throughout the day. These activities are part of the routines and experiences that help make our school both structured and engaging.
We are also looking ahead to the next two weeks. Batey Mart will take place on April 2, and Track Change Day will be on April 3 with a spirit theme of Favorite Disney Character or Singer Day. That same evening, we will host STEM Night from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. We look forward to welcoming families to campus for that event and celebrating the curiosity, problem-solving, and creativity of our students.
As we move through the week, we will continue to emphasize the Bobcat Pact: being Safe, Responsible, Respectful, and Resourceful. These expectations guide our work every day and help us maintain a school culture where students can learn and grow.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
Every day is a great day to be a Bobcat.
Sincerely,
Will Jones
Principal, Edna Batey Elementary
We are excited to welcome Mr. Dylan Rander, who will be joining us to teach PE for the remainder of the school year following Ms. Lolly Jones's retirement.
We want to take a moment to celebrate Ms. Jones and her many years of service to our students and school community. Her impact has been lasting, and we are grateful for the care, commitment, and consistency she brought to Batey over the years. We wish her the very best in her retirement.
We are in good hands moving forward. Mr. Rander is highly recommended and brings a unique background and global perspective to our school. He began teaching English in 2003 and has worked in Mexico, Spain, and Germany, primarily with doctors, university students, and executives. He also holds an MBA and a BA in Spanish. For the past three and a half years, he has been serving students in EGUSD as a substitute teacher, including in several long-term assignments and more than a year in PE.
Mr. Rander has traveled to more than 1,000 places in 30 countries and speaks five languages fluently. He also enjoys travel, photography, hiking, board games, and trivia. Students will know him as Mr. R, and we are excited to welcome him to our school community.
Welcome to Batey, Mr. Rander.
Every day is a great day to be a Bobcat.
March 5th, 2026
On March 5th, Emiliano in Mr. Weller’s class was one of our Vice Principals for the Day! He redeemed 50 Batey Bucks for this exciting experience. He earned those bucks when school staff noticed him following our Bobcat Pact!
Emiliano did an amazing job as a VP, joining for the year team huddle, visiting classrooms, greeting our guest readers, and even using the walkie talkie! Here’s what he had to share after his special day:
What were you most looking forward to about being the vice principal for the day?
I was looking forward to visiting classrooms. I wanted to go to Ms. Becker’s class and other first grade classes. I was excited to see some friends and also my brother.
Tell us about your experience! How did it go?
It was really good! I liked everything- helping at Batey Mart, using the walkie talkie for roll call, shaking hands with the police officers who came to read to my class, and giving out Batey bucks and my business card. When I went into my classroom, everyone asked me about my walkie talkie and my Batey Bucks. It was fun!
Sounds so awesome! What was your favorite part?
My favorite part was helping at the Batey Mart. I could help with taking the bucks when people paid for snacks and it was really fun. I want to do it again!
What advice would you give to the next VP for the Day?
I would recommend following the Bobcat Pact. Be safe, be responsible, be respectful, and be resourceful.
We want to celebrate a proud Bobcat moment. The Albiani boys basketball team recently won a championship, and three members of that team are former Batey students: Jacobo Ramirez, Samuel Le, and Jacob Chau.
We are always proud to see our former Bobcats doing well and representing themselves with excellence. Congratulations to these students and their families.
Every day is a great day to be a Bobcat.

Bobcats… WOW!!!
The official total is 5,778 miles!!! 🎉
That means Campbell didn’t just make it home to Elk Grove, California—he blew past the goal and went even farther than the full round trip to the Statue of Liberty and back!
"Bobcats, I’m HOME—and I went even farther than I ever imagined! You read so much that you took me across the country and back, and then some. I’m so proud of you. This was the best adventure ever!"

Upcoming Events and More!
Thank you to the folks who showed up to our PTA meeting last Tuesday to help elect our new board and approve budget revisions. Unfortunately, our Treasurer position remains vacant, and without a treasurer, the PTA cannot operate.
Without the PTA, so much of what makes our Batey community so awesome is at risk...
Batey Bash, Monster Mash, STEM Night and the Art Show, Chalk It Ups and Movie Nights and so many of the other enriching activities that the PTA helps support. No more spirit wear, no more sponsorship of Teacher Appreciation Week or subsidies for school sports and field trip transportation.
All it takes is one dedicated parent to step up.
We’re proud to share that the Edna Batey Elementary PTA has been named a 2026 Spotlight Award Winner by the California State PTA for Membership & Outreach!
The Spotlight Awards recognize a single PTA program in California across several categories, including Advocacy, Collaboration, DEI, and Family Engagement—making this recognition even more special. We’re honored to be recognized alongside other PTAs across our state!
Our award highlights our success in growing our membership while raising awareness of our PTA’s mission.
Our award earns us:
• $100 grant from the California State PTA & a banner to celebrate with our school community
• Recognition at the State PTA Convention in Fresno (May 1–3, 2026)
👏 Thank you to everyone who helped make recognition possible. This win belongs to everyone in our amazing Bobcat community!
Join your friends and Batey buddies for a fun night out at Dust Bowl Brewing Co. on Wednesday, April 22. This one isn’t just for the kids, folks. (It's really almost a parent mixer, right?) 10% of all sales (including alcohol) will go to the PTA so come on out and join us for a fun night with good food and drinks! Just present the flyer (printed or on your phone when ordering or at pickup).
When: Wednesday, April 22
Time: 4 - 9 p.m.
Where: Dust Bowl Brewing Co.,
9676 Railroad Street, Elk Grove
This is not an EGUSD-sponsored activity.
We are excited to continue our PTA Member of the Month recognition program again! This is a wonderful opportunity to honor and celebrate the individuals who go above and beyond in supporting our school community.
Parents, teachers, staff, and PTA members are all encouraged to nominate someone who has made a positive impact through their contributions to our school. Whether volunteering time, offering creative ideas, or supporting our students and staff, we want to recognize those who embody the spirit of "It takes a village to raise a Bobcat."
Nominations can be submitted via forms in the front office or via this link (nominate here) and are reviewed monthly. Recognition recipients are honored at track change assemblies and via our social media and newsletters.
March is National Nutrition Month®! We would like students to create a poster that features ONE of the many California grown fruits and vegetables that makes its way from the farm to their school (flyer attached).
When students submit their artwork, please make sure their name, school, grade and teacher’s name are on the back of their poster. This is important. Artwork without all the required information on it may not be included in the contest.
If you have a student that wants to create a digital drawing (google drawings, illustrator, procreate, etc.), they are more than welcome to. We ask that it be their original design, not imported pictures or AI. Digital entries can be submitted as a pdf, picture file (png, jpg) or a link to the file (in the case of google drawings) and if possible printed out and submitted through the cafeteria.
We have asked that all entries be submitted to your FNS Lead no later than April 17, 2026. This deadline allows for all tracks to participate.
If your student must stay home for illness reasons, please be sure to follow the site attendance procedure. You can find that information below under "BobCat Front Office FAQ's" under "Attendance".

Parents or guardians have the primary responsibility for appropriate standards of dress and grooming. However, as an educational entity, Batey Elementary School has the responsibility to establish and maintain standards of dress and grooming that support a positive, appropriate, and safe learning and teaching environment. These dress expectations align with the dress code for the Pleasant Grove (PG) Region.
The purpose of dress expectations is to facilitate education, not to inhibit any person’s taste in attire or appearance. Students should be clean and neatly dressed in a manner that is appropriate for the school setting, not hazardous to their health and safety, and not disruptive or distracting from the school's educational program. In addition, no articles of clothing, apparel, or school materials, including hats, backpacks, and binders, may have pictures, printing, or writing that is crude, vulgar, profane, sexually suggestive, racially, ethnically, or religiously intolerant, that contain images of weapons, tobacco, drugs, and/or alcohol, or which the school’s administration reasonably predicts will disrupt the learning environment.
Basic Principle: Certain Body Parts Must Be Covered for All Students
Students are required, at a minimum, to have outer clothing that covers and conceals the trunk or torso of their body from armpit level to thigh level at all times. The trunk or torso, including buttocks and chest, must be covered at all times, including when students are sitting, reaching, and/or bending. In addition:
–Straps or sleeves must secure tops with necklines that fall below the armpits.
–The hem of the shirt must cover the rib cage.
– Students must wear shoes at all times. All sandals must have a backstrap for safety purposes.
The school administration may limit or prohibit specific clothing that has been determined by law enforcement or gang experts to be affiliated with an actual gang. In consultation with law enforcement or other gang experts, the school administration may limit clothing or apparel when there is a reasonable basis to identify such clothing or apparel as gang-affiliated. Limitations and prohibitions on gang-related clothing or apparel will be applied equally to all students, and in no instance will a student’s clothing or apparel be identified as gang-related based solely on the student’s race, national origin, or ancestry.
