AR Reading

The following is the process for the AR program:

-beginning of the school year students take an initial reading level test. This reading level was sent home in September. The second reading level test was given in November. That went home before Parent/Teacher Conference. The next reading level test will be before the next report card in March. Only 3 are required for a school year.

-AR program's purpose is to help students focus on practicing reading. The more practice the better the reading level will increase.

-Students check out an AR book each week. Read both at home and at school during the week. Place the book on reading log.

-Take a comprehension test online, with AR program, the next following week.

-Each book has a designated points if student passes the quiz. Students are given a total points since the beginning.

-I print a report at the end of the month of points students have earned for the month. Each child depending on reading level have been given a minimum of points they should earn each month. This report is sent home each month.

-Parents need to support by making sure student is reading each night, reminding student if they have taken the AR quiz for the book. Making sure the reading log has been completed.

WRITING

Summarizing informational text. The following is what needs to be in their writing:

  • Includes a topic sentence that captures the central idea.
  • States the title and author
  • Includes only the main ideas
  • Paraphrases information using academic language (example: vivid verbs, explicit words for specific items)
  • Follows same organizational structure as author
  • Uses transition words
  • Includes a concluding sentence

See the samples below of what is expected. I have also included a rubric of how this writing will be graded.

Writing by Design samples of Work and the Grading Rubric

Above is a text students read, they wrote notes on the main idea of each paragraph, then compared to the notes from the company. Continuing to turn these notes into a paragraph. We worked together as a class editing to include vivid verbs, adding description, paraphrasing, and adding a conclusion. They are at the same time are working on another article on their own without help. We are also working on conventions (spelling, punctuation, paragraph format). We will then continue practicing with other articles, continuing onto writing a summary in an essay format.

Summary Informational Rubric

Total points for a perfect paper would be 24 or 100%.
