1st Grade reading Assessments

If you do NOT have an assessment you already use for these skills, you can use one of the tests below.

• Decoding: VCCV test is equivalent to the 80% proficiency benchmarks for BPST III (2 syllable words) and the BPST IV row 13-i. 

• Phonemic Awareness: Benchmark is 80% proficiency using Heggerty's oral segmenting test.

• Oral Reading Fluency: Benchmarks of 60 wcpm with 95% accuracy are based on Compiled ORF Norms. Passages are from DIBELS.

     Suggestion:  only test fluency with first graders if they have mastered silent "e" (BPST IV row 8-d)
