Welcome to First Grade!

First grade is a year of tremendous academic growth as students become more confident readers, writers, and mathematicians. Students begin working more independently while continuing to build strong foundational skills.

Please remember that every child learns at their own pace. These are general expectations and may vary by classroom.

• Read grade-level books with increasing fluency

• Addition and subtraction within 20

• Place value to 120

• Telling time to the hour and half-hour

• Counting money

• Measuring length

• Identifying two- and three-dimensional shapes

Homework Tips

• Read at least 20 minutes every evening.

• Practice sight words and spelling words.

• Review math facts using games or flashcards.

• Encourage neatness and completing assignments independently.
