The National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) Systems Engineering Research Center launched in 2008 with a motto of building the internet of energy: a network of distributed energy resources that intelligently manages power using secure communications and advanced power electronics. The FREEDM Center is one of two NSF Engineering Research Centers (ERCs) led by NC State, one of only two universities leading two active ERCs simultaneously. The research priorities include the nanoscale workings of power electronic devices, the macroscale dynamics of integrating fault-isolation systems, and everything in between.
