Day 3: Going Beyond the Postcard

Virtual reality (VR) technology places users within a fully digital, computer-generated environment. While VR headsets offer the highest level of immersion, similar experiences can also be achieved through various software platforms. The effectiveness of these experiences depends on factors such as visual fidelity, usability, and the software's ability to create a strong sense of presence and engagement.

Through immersive technology and virtual world simulations, VR allows viewing of different environments in a realistic way. This VR technology can create engaging learning experiences for students, even without VR headsets. With high-quality visuals and audio cues, students can be immersed in a guided visual experience that lets them follow a predetermined path through a new environment. 

The use of guided virtual experiences can also "be used to introduce new concepts and ideas in a more engaging way, which can help to increase student engagement and enthusiasm" (Al-Ansi et al., 2023, p. 8). Specifically in the context of social studies, students can be 'transported' into world simulations for an immersive, guided experience that increases their interest in learning and understanding of history and geography. For example, students can observe authentic interactions in real-world settings from around the globe. As shown in language learning, YouTube 360° videos can be valuable instructional tools in education (Cheng & Chin-Chung, 2019). 

Using YouTube 360° videos and images, users can enjoy a silent walk through a location in another country and listen to narration of famous or cultural sites, with the creator pointing out specific features. In addition, students can virtually travel to a location that may be inaccessible in person for students with disabilities. Allowing students to follow a guided path in a virtual environment can make learning more accessible and eliminate barriers. Overall, VR technology provides students with rich, engaging experiences that turn facts and history into immersive learning. 

In this activity, you will virtually visit some of Japan's recognizable landmarks using interactive 360° videos. Unlike a traditional video, you'll be able to control your perspective by looking around the environment, allowing you to observe each location from multiple viewpoints as the experience unfolds. Some experiences include narration or ambient sounds, while others are designed to let the visuals speak for themselves.

For the most immersive experience, use a mobile device to view each 360° video. Simply scan the QR codes with your phone or tablet, then move your device to naturally explore the environments in every direction.
