Welcome to our Open Educational Resource (OER), where you will explore the educational potential of immersive technologies through a showcase of a virtual field trip (VFT). This resource examines how VR technologies can be used to create meaningful, engaging, and authentic learning experiences in high school classrooms.
Throughout this OER, you will:
Explore an overview of immersive experiences, created in Genially.
Learn about immersive technologies and their classroom applications.
Immerse yourself in a virtual field trip experience
Examine current market trends related to immersive technologies and virtual field trips
The centrepiece of this OER is a four-day virtual field trip that demonstrates a progression of immersive learning experiences. Each day in this country offers a different level of immersion, including soundscapes, language learning, historical significance, and visits to famous sites, showcasing how immersive technologies can deepen learner engagement in a social studies context.
Each section includes:
Pedagogical connections for high school classrooms
Classroom implementation considerations
A brief reflection activity to reinforce your learning
To conclude the OER, review the concepts we covered and complete the Final Reflection, where you will apply the concepts explored throughout the resource and reflect on your learning from the OER.
Use the navigation buttons at the bottom of each page to progress through our OER.
Virtual Field-Trip Presentation
One student explores a 360 ° scene and describes what they see to the class.
Shadowing Station
Students repeat key words or phrases taught in VR, then classmates repeat aloud.
Station in Relay
Student completes VR comprehension questions and then reports answers to their group.
Activity Rotation Station
One student or group uses the headset for an activity while others complete a related worksheet. Rotate every 5/7 minutes.
Guided VR trip
The teacher has all students enter the same trip and pauses at key moments for prompts.
City / Culture Jigsaw
Groups experience different locations or scenarios, then create a mini-presentation.
Conversation Rehearsal
Students complete a VR scenario, then repeat the same task with a real partner.
Timed retrieval
Students replay a spaced-repetition mini-game in VR, then complete a paper exit ticket.
Seamless Cross-play
Some immersive apps such as Noun Town for language learning allow students to use the same profile on both Chromebooks and VR headsets. This allows for more flexibility and options for teachers.
360° Field Trip
The YouTube 360 experience may be the most immersive with a headset on, but students can also navigate 360-degree spaces on a Chromebook.
Accessibility Considerations
Having a non-VR option available helps all students participate, as some students may not be able to safely or comfortably engage in a VR activity.

Recommended for the Best Experience
To get the most out of this virtual field trip, we recommend using headphones or earbuds to fully experience the spatial audio and immersive elements. For activities featuring 360° videos, a mobile device (phone or tablet) offers a more natural viewing experience by letting you look around simply by moving it. While all activities can be completed on a computer, using a mobile device or VR headset will provide the greatest sense of presence and engagement.
