I originally had a completely different idea for the gala this year but I struggled to come up with a proper ending for the story. So, I took a story straight out of my portfolio and slap together some quick scenes to create an animation for the gala. Keep in mind that this isn't supposed to tell the full story, it's more like a trailer., plus I wasn't able to include the entire storyboard in it anyway.
For this clip, I animated with Adobe Animate as it was the only animation software I had access to. Then I edited the animations together using After Effects. This is the first time I've ever used After Effects to edit my work, so I went ham with it lol. Hope the effects don't turn out to be too overwhelming.
Enjoy~!
I did the sketches in Clip Studio Paint, and I would animate with it too if I could but the PRO version only lets you animate for 24 frames max. I prefer Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop over Adobe Illustrator and Animate because they are raster based, which are capable of producing smoother lines and just overall less annoying than vector programs. Because of that, I try to use as much of Photoshop and CSP as possible when doing basically anything lol (aka. creating backgrounds, character illustrations, painting idle objects,...)
These characters sketches aren't new :P As I mentioned before I took the story and world I built for my college portfolio and turned it into a different project. (Maybe I would've gotten a higher score on that portfolio if I submitted an animation project like this x___x") Despite being made strictly for school purposes, I feel very passionate about the story. In fact, it is something that I would like to develop into a comic book of some sort one day. (Working on it) Because of that, I would like for you to uncover the mysteries and explore the story yourself... hopefully one day.
Below are the animations I created during this school year, not too shabby I think. The explosion GIF and the of the guitar girl were parts of something that never got finished because I ran out of time. ( re-occurring problem with all of my projects ) This was also for my portfolio last year but I didn't finish it in time for submission. ( my portfolio included no animation whatsoever 0__0".... shocking, I know. ) I'm still very proud of it though as you can see my improvement since the Teddie's Day Off clip. The Teddie clip was intended for SKILLS 2020. But because of Covid the competition was switched to solo, I gave up my spot for my partner instead. Speaking of, I worked with Chantal Sibley on this project last year and she was dead ass AMAZING. It was so fun and the whole story was her idea! Us staying after school the day before the deadline to rush whatever was left of the animation was one of the best times I've had in high school lol. ( I miss my animation pals Gabi and Chantal T^T )
Below are the characters from the same universe as the two girls featured in the main animation project. This thing (whatever it is) was the result of me trying to quickly summarize the entire universe to include in my portfolio. Since my actual animation (from the clips above) was taking ages to do all by myself. I have a whole new level of respect for animation studios because I know they're working day and night no food no sleep to finish that ish. The illustrations and design sketches here were done using CSP, again, it's a very versatile and useful program and a lot cheaper than Photoshop. However, I prefer Photoshop when I edit images together because of their adjustment tools, they have a lot of easy and convenient tools to alter an image. (I'm too lazy to redraw what I've already exported) And that's what I did here! The graphics and texts were all created using Photoshop. I know that the texts are kind of hard to read due to the resolution compression when I upload the images, but I really hope you guys are interested enough to give it a try hehe. I worked really hard developing these stories, and they're ever-changing because my dumb ass can never be consistent. However, they will give you a closer yet vague look at world that I built, and also give you more puzzle pieces for the story of the animation.
