Homework - 2 Triangulation Problems

Use Triangulation to find the distance to the objects below:

Q#1 - Baseline: 20m, Angle A: 81 Degrees, Angle B: 77 Degrees

Q#2 - Baseline: 89m, Angle A: 55 Degrees, Angle B: 71 Degrees

Triangulation - Finding the distance to an object from a given or measured baseline

Steps:

1. Find or measure a baseline distance perpendicular to an object. Find or measure the angles to the object from each endpoint.
2. Convert baseline measurement to something manageable that we can draw on our page. (Usually convert the unit from metres to centimetres/millimetres)
3. Begin the process of drawing an accurate diagram

• Start by drawing your converted baseline. A measured straight line near the bottom of your page.
• Record your angle measurements by placing the protractor at each end point to calculate the angles. Place a tick at the top of the measurement
• Connect the end points with a line through the respective ticks.
• Find the intersection of both of the lines
• Draw a perpendicular straight line from the intersection point down to the baseline

4. Measure the distance of the line from the baseline to the intersection (object)

5. Convert measured line value back to original units.

Space Exploration Debate

The topic of the debate is:

Be it resolved that the Canadian Government should expand its space exploration program.

You will not know if you need to argue in favor or against the above resolution. Therefore you must be prepared to understand both sides of the argument and defend your answers.

Based on the last two days you will come up with your top 3 reasons BOTH for and against the above resolution. You should be able to discuss these in detail (a good marker is can you talk about the point for at least 2 minutes in detail).
