Grade 6s,

Attached above is an example of a schedule you can follow for the week. It provides a break down of the tasks that have been assigned to the students. This is also posted in Google Classroom for the students on the Bly 65 Homeroom page. Each assignment and task can be found in the subject classroom under Classwork.

Office Hours for Google Meet: Monday-Thursday from 1pm-3pm.

From 1:00pm-2:00pm you can join Google Meet to ask questions about Math by using the code given in our Google Classroom.

From 2:00pm-3:00pm you can join Google Meet to ask questions about English by using the code given in our Google Classroom.

On Thursday, April 9, 2020 we will have a whole class Google Meet session at 1:00pm to go over our thoughts and questions for the week as well to give students an opportunity to connect with each other.

Please note that Friday, April 10, 2020 is a holiday and there will not be any schoolwork or Google Meets that day. As well, Monday, April 13, 2020 is a PD Day, therefore we will resume online learning and Google Meet conferences on Tuesday, April 14.

Miss Bly

After being back from Winter Break for a few weeks now, we are finally back in the swing of things! We are excited to have welcome Ms. Patterson into our classroom and will work towards achieving a smooth transition once Ms. Bonello heads off to have her baby. Here is what is going on in the classroom these days:

Science:

• We are wrapping up with our tree and forest concepts. Students should completed their news papers and will be painting their tree cookies this week.
• The next concept we will be looking at is crime scene investigation! We will be preparing for our trip to the Police Interpretive Centre on January 29, 2020.

Math:

• We will be continuing on with shape and space by looking specifically at the different attributes of shapes, including angles.

Report Cards will be available online this Friday January 24, 2020.

Students are officially counting down the days remaining until Winter Break! We will be introducing a tree and forest task that will require students to create a newspaper with a partner. They are encouraged to continue to look at the sections within a newspaper and brainstorm what it is that they would like to include in their newspapers! Here is a snapshot of what else we are working on:

Science:

• We are working at sanding out tree cookies so that we are able to read their stories better.
• Students will partake in small lessons that further their understanding of trees and their role in the environment.

Math:

• We are looking at transformations; translations, rotations and reflections. Students are encouraged to continue working on strengthening their computation skills.

Language Arts:

• We will be writing letters/cards to our troops overseas. Students will be encouraged to think of kind and uplifting words to send to the troops.

As the middle of November quickly approaches, students are continuing to build positive relationships with their peers and work further their learning in many different subject areas. Grade 6 students did a wonderful job during their SoundKreations performance on Friday and will now continue back with their normal Physical Education and PAL classes.

There will also be a Book Fair this week in the Learning Commons. Ms. Bonello’s class will be attending Tuesday morning at 10:30 am.

Please remember to sign up for Parent Teacher Conferences through the school’s website. Conferences will be taking place this Thursday November 21^st and as a result, students will have a half day on Thursday and a PD on Friday November 22^nd. If for any reason you are unable to attend conferences during this time, please contact your student’s teacher!

Here is what we are focusing on this week:

Science:

• We are continuing to study trees and taking an in-depth look at tree cookies. Trees will be a common theme over the course of this year in many subject areas.

Math:

• Our morning Math Vitamins have had us beginning to plot coordinates and look at transformations. We will continue studying shapes in this way.
• Students have been working at hard at creating infographics that look at comparing and contrasting different sets of data taken from the 2019 Student Vote. They have been doing an excellent job at putting this together! Students should have this complete by Wednesday November 20, 2019.

Language Arts:

• We will continue reading PAX and taking a look at the new characters that we have been introduced to, creating character sketches for each.
• Students in Ms. Bonello’s class will be writing a news article this week!

Music/Art:

• Ms. Bonello’s class will continue working on our Music/Art task. Students will have an opportunity to begin their art pieces on Tuesday. Please remember to bring in any materials that you may want to use from home!

This week students have to look forward to many exciting guests including:

Monday November 4th: Political Cartoonist Fred Curatolo

• Be sure to ask your student what they learned from this very informative presentation. Perhaps they can share how a political cartoon is created!
• Students will also be analyzing politcal cartoons this week. Ask your student to share a political cartoon with you. How do they interpret this cartoon?

November 4th - 15th: SoundKreations - Dance program that will be taking place over the course of the next two weeks with a final performance on Friday November 15th from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm.

In Social Studies this week, we will looking at what happens now that Justin Trudeau is Prime Minster. What are his next moves? What can we as Canadians expect for the coming months?

Halloween Spirit Week: The Leadership Club has organized some exciting events for next week. These include:

• Thursday October 31 - Costumes for second half of the day

Texas Donut Order: Orders are due on October 17, 2019 and will be delivered to students on October 25, 2019.

Student Vote: Voting will take place for grade 6 students on Thursday October 17, 2019. Still unsure on who to vote for? Students have been provided with various different websites and tools that can assist them in better understanding each party’s platform. These include:

Imagery Text: How can our words spark our touch, sight, taste, feel and sense of smell? Students have been working towards compiling a paragraph that does just that. Inspired by the works of Ray Bradbury, students have been putting together a paragraph on a dystopian world that evokes emotions and speaks to all 5 senses. Ask your student to share their paragraph with you!

What’s Trending Fridays: Have an article about a news story that happened in Canada? Bring it in on Friday for a class discussion.

Bonello’s A Walk Through the Ages: Grade 6s are looking at music from the 1990s; Wednesday 1991-1992, Thursday 1993-1994, and Friday 1995-1996. Check out what songs made the charts during these times and be ready to share in class!

Google Drive Task:

• Go to your Google Drive to create a folder and label it "First Name Last Name, 2019/2020" eg. Kathleen Bonello, 2019/2020
• Within your new folder, add subfolders for each of the following subject areas:

  • Social Studies
  • L.A.

IRIS Task:

In both Bonello & Kohlman's classes, we have been talking about goals. Today, you will be entering these goals into IRIS.

• Bonello's Class: You will be entering the goals that you wrote on the sticky notes. Have you achieved these goals yet? If so, reflect upon it. Are you proud of your accomplishment? Was there some sort of obstacle or challenge that made it difficult for you to achieve this goal?
