With almost 3,000 students from South Africa currently studying in the United States, South Africa is a growing market with a lot of potential for recruiting institutions. Our EducationUSA Advising Centers and American Corners across South Africa provide guidance and information for students interested in studying at U.S. colleges and universities. We also welcome and assist U.S. higher education institutions interested in recruiting students from South Africa. Our events include monthly introductory information sessions, follow-up group advising through our EducationUSA Scholars program, and outreach to high schools and universities.
Ethiopia has over 3,000 students in different U.S. colleges and universities. This figure positioned Ethiopia as the region’s fourth top sender of students to the United States. Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia, located on a plateau surrounded by hills and mountains in the center of the country. The city has a population of about 5 million people and is situated at an elevation of 2355 meters above sea level. It is also a hub of economic, social, and political activity in Africa, hosting the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). It has a diverse population and culture, with churches, mosques, and museums, including one that displays the skeleton of Lucy, an ancient human ancestor. Addis Ababa is the educational and administrative center of Ethiopia containing several teacher-training colleges and technical schools.
The city is home to Addis Ababa University, the biggest institution of higher learning in Ethiopia with over 50,000 students. Some attractions in the city are Unity Park, the Friendship Park, the Entoto Park, the Meskel Festival, and the annual religious holiday (in September) includes the burning of a large bonfire. The Addis Mercato is the largest open-air marketplace in the city. The Piazza in the central city and Bole Road to the southeast feature more expensive European-style shopping centers. There are several restaurants and small eating places throughout the city offering European dishes and local food including the famous Dorro wot (Chicken stew). Eating minced raw meet is common. It is not safe to drink tap water but there is a variety of bottled water options and other delicious beverage options. Addis Ababa experiences mild weather throughout the year with rainy seasons of June to September and March to April. It gets a little colder during early mornings and in the evenings, so bring a jacket and smile with you on this tour.
Over the past year, the number of Kenyans studying in the U.S. hit the 4,000+ mark, registering a 6.8% increase and cementing the country’s position as the third top sending country on the continent! The interest in the United States as a prime destination for higher learning continues to be on an upward trajectory especially as Kenya celebrates its 60th anniversary of its partnership with the United States. To support prospective students, EducationUSA Kenya has myriad engagement opportunities with HEIs including hosting thematic monthly webinars, biannual application workshops, annual counselor workshops, facilitating university partnerships, school outreach, and university fairs! All help in demystifying the application process through the Five Steps to U.S. Study, create visibility to HEIs, and increase traffic of Kenyan students to their dream schools in the United States. The diversity of students is spread across the country, from the capital to coastal towns, home to hidden academic giants. We would love for you to visit with us and showcase study opportunities at your institutions. Karibuni Kenya, the Pride of Africa!
Akwaaba! Ghana currently has over 6,450 students studying across all 50 states in the United States. We are the second highest sender in Sub-Saharan Africa and number 14 in the world in sending graduate students to the United States. This puts Ghana among the top 25 countries globally for sending all categories of students to the United States.
The U.S. Embassy and EducationUSA Ghana invites you to visit Ghana's two largest cities, Accra and Kumasi. Both cities host some of Ghana’s most prestigious universities and largest business communities that benefit directly from students who graduate from U.S. institutions.
EducationUSA Ghana operates two Advising Centers and has four EducationUSA Advisers who assist students through their college applications and provide services to the U.S. higher education community. Both centers offer comprehensive services and deliver free orientations routinely on the Five Steps to U.S. Study.
With over 17,000 students from Nigeria currently studying in the United States, Nigeria is the world's seventh highest sending country of students to the United States and the top sender in Sub-Saharan Africa. EducationUSA Nigeria operates six EducationUSA Advising Centers with nine EducationUSA Advisers to assist students and provide services to the U.S. higher education community. Two of these centers offer comprehensive services in Abuja and Lagos, while four offer standard services in Kano, Ibadan, Jos, and Calabar.
