Week 4 -5
Over the past fortnight in Literacy, Year 2 students have been learning to comprehend and write persuasive texts. In Reading, students have been identifying the author's purpose and answering literal and inferential questions to demonstrate their understanding of different persuasive texts. In Writing, students have been planning and creating their own persuasive texts, following the correct text structure and incorporating persuasive language features to convince their audience and strengthen their arguments.
Over the past fortnight in Maths, Year 2 students have been exploring Location and Direction. They have been learning to read and interpret maps of familiar places, identify important features and describe where different locations can be found. Students have also been creating and following directions to move from one place to another on a map.
We have also been developing our understanding of directional language and turns, including clockwise, anticlockwise, quarter-turns, half-turns and full turns. Students have been practising how to follow and give clear directions in the correct order, thinking carefully about which way to turn and how far to travel. These activities have helped students build their mapping skills and confidence when describing and following directions
In Personal and Social Learning, our Year 2 students revisited our school value of Achievement. Students reflected on something they had worked hard on and felt proud of, then designed their own trophies to celebrate their achievements. We discussed how achievement is not just about getting things right, but also about trying our best, showing persistence and recognising our progress.
We also explored what it means to be strong and gentle, learning that we can show both qualities through our actions. Students discussed using self-control, making safe and caring choices, and understanding that being strong does not mean hurting others. We continued our learning about teamwork, focusing on listening, taking turns, sharing ideas and supporting one another. Students explored how these everyday actions help us build positive relationships and create a supportive classroom community.
In CBL, students stepped into the role of game designers as they used ScratchJr to create their own basketball-themed games. Through hands-on exploration, they learned how to bring their ideas to life by selecting characters, adding movement and action blocks, and sequencing instructions to create interactive games.
There was plenty of excitement as students experimented with different coding combinations, tested their creations and discovered how small changes to their code could produce different outcomes. Along the way, they developed their problem-solving and critical thinking skills, learning that mistakes are an important part of the design process.
It was wonderful to see students showcasing their creativity, sharing ideas with classmates and celebrating their successes as their basketball games came to life on screen.
Over the past two weeks, Year 2 students have been exploring advertisements and learning how texts are designed to persuade an audience. Through a range of print and digital advertisements, students have identified how words, images, colours and slogans are used to capture attention and influence people’s choices. They have also been developing their comprehension skills by identifying opinions, reasons and persuasive language.
Students have put their learning into practice by creating and publishing their own advertisements! They carefully selected high modality words such as must, amazing, fantastic and best to convince their audience to buy their product. We are excited to see their creativity shine through their finished advertisements and the persuasive techniques they have used to make their products stand out!
Over the past two weeks, our Year 2 students have continued building their understanding of fractions. After learning about halves, we moved on to quarters (¼) and eighths (⅛), exploring how a whole can be divided into equal parts.
Students practised finding fractions of different shapes and collections, making sure each part was equal. We also worked through worded problems, applying our understanding of fractions to different situations and explaining our thinking.
Through these activities, students developed their confidence in recognising, representing and finding fractions of a whole. It has been great to see them building on their learning and using their mathematical skills to solve problems.
This week, our Year 2 students continued exploring their own special powers and discovering how we can use our strengths to make a positive difference!
We put on our problem-solving hats and took a walk around the school to observe our surroundings. As we explored different areas, we looked carefully for problems or things that could be improved. We shared our observations, discussed why these problems might occur and used our creativity, curiosity and teamwork to think of possible solutions.
Our students discovered that even small ideas can make a big difference! We thought about how our own special powers could help us solve real-world problems and how technology might help us bring our ideas to life.
Next week, we will begin coding! Students will start exploring how we can use technology to communicate our ideas, create instructions and develop solutions to the problems we have identified.
We are excited to see our Year 2 students combine their unique strengths with technology as they take their first steps into the world of coding!
This week, we are learning how to show teamwork by working respectfully and responsibly with others. Working together helps us share our strengths and ideas to achieve a common goal. As we re-establish our teamwork skills, we take part in fun team-building challenges such as building bridges, balancing cards, and creating cup towers. In one of our exciting task, we receive cups with very few instructions and decide whether to work in small groups or combine as a whole class to create the biggest and most successful team structure. These activities help us practise communication, cooperation, problem-solving, and working together effectively.
This term in Reading, Year 2 students have been exploring advertisements and learning how texts are designed to persuade an audience. Through a range of print and digital advertisements, students have identified the purpose of advertising and discussed how words, images, colours and slogans are used to capture attention and influence the reader.
Students have been developing their comprehension skills by identifying opinions, reasons and persuasive language within advertisements. They have practised asking questions, making connections and discussing how different advertising features help communicate a message.
By analysing advertisements, students are becoming more thoughtful readers who can recognise how authors and creators use language and visual elements to persuade others. This learning is helping students build critical thinking skills while deepening their understanding of persuasive texts.
This week, our Year 2 students were introduced to fractions! We explored the concept of halves by learning how to divide shapes and collections into two equal parts.
Students practised identifying and making halves of different shapes, as well as finding half of a collection of objects. Through hands-on activities and practical examples, they discovered that both parts must be equal to make a half.
We also introduced the fraction notation ½ and explored how two halves come together to make one whole. Students learnt to represent this using the equation ½ + ½ = 1 whole.
We are excited to continue building our understanding of fractions and exploring new ways to recognise and represent them in everyday life!
This term, Year 2 students are discovering that we all have our own special powers! These are not superpowers like flying or becoming invisible — they are the good traits and strengths that make us who we are.
We are learning about qualities such as kindness, creativity, courage, teamwork, curiosity, responsibility and perseverance. We will think about the powers we already have and how we can use them to help ourselves and others.
This term, we will explore how we can combine our own powers with technology. We will discover how technology can help us share our ideas, solve problems, be creative and make a positive difference.
We are excited to see what happens when we combine our powers + technology!
This week, our Year 2 students focused on re-establishing responsibility and strengthening the routines that help our classroom run smoothly. Through class discussions and practical activities, students practised completing bookwork neatly, following expectations when lining up, moving respectfully around the school, and using different learning spaces appropriately.
Students also took part in classroom jobs and explored the important role they play in contributing to our classroom community. We discussed how being responsible, organised, and considerate helps create a positive learning environment where everyone can be successful.
These activities are helping students build independence, confidence, and the skills needed to be responsible learners throughout the term.
