Term 2
Week 8-9
In Literacy this fornight, we have been developing our reading comprehension and writing skills. In reading, we practised asking and answering both literal questions (answers found directly in the text) and inferential questions where we use clues and prior knowledge to work out our answers. These skills help us think more deeply about what we read and improve our understanding of texts. In writing, we explored procedural texts by drafting our own procedures. We focused on using a variety of sentence starters, writing complete sentences that make sense, organising steps in a logical order, and connecting ideas clearly. These skills helped us become more confident readers, and writers for our audience.
In Numeracy we have been developing our understanding of capacity and strengthening our number fluency through bonds to 20.
During our learning about capacity, students explored and compared how much different containers can hold using informal units. They estimated, measured, poured, observed, and discussed their thinking using mathematical language such as full, empty, half-full, more than, less than, and capacity. Students discovered that bigger containers do not always hold more and practised making predictions before testing their ideas.
Alongside this, students have been building confidence with number bonds to 20. Number bonds help students recognise how numbers work together and support quick mental strategies for addition and subtraction. Through games, hands-on materials, and partner activities, students practised identifying pairs of numbers that make 20 and explaining their mathematical thinking.

In CBL, our Grade 2 students have been busy designing informative pamphlets and posters to showcase their learning about Earth and Space Sciences. Throughout the term, students have explored weather and seasons, moon phases and their effects on Earth, the Sun’s position and Earth’s orbit, and how seasons impact animals, plants, and people. They have also investigated the different planets in our solar system and learned how reducing, reusing, and recycling resources can help care for our planet. To further deepen their understanding, students participated in an exciting incursion where they learned about how Earth’s rotation creates day and night. We are proud of the creativity, knowledge, and effort students have demonstrated in their final projects.
In Personal and Social learning we have been learning how to communicate our feelings respectfully using "I feel" statements.
We practised saying things like:
"I feel sad when I am left out."
"I feel frustrated when someone interrupts me."
"I feel happy when my friends play with me."
Using "I feel" statements helps us share our feelings, understand others, and solve problems calmly.
We also learned about the No, Go, Tell strategy.
When something makes us feel unsafe or uncomfortable, we can:
No – Say "No" firmly.
Go – Move away to a safe place.
Tell – Tell a trusted adult what happened.
We discussed different situations and practised using the strategy. Learning these skills helps us build positive relationships, solve problems respectfully, and stay safe.
Term 2
Week 6-7
Year 2 students have been learning about procedure texts. We have been exploring how procedures help us explain how to do or make something by giving clear instructions in the correct order.
We have identified the important features of procedure texts, including a heading, materials or ingredients, and step-by-step instructions. Students have practised using time connectives such as first, next, then, and finally to help sequence their ideas.
During our reading lessons, students investigated different examples of procedures and answered questions about the text. In writing lessons, students planned and created their own procedures, focusing on writing complete sentences, using action verbs, and organising their ideas clearly.
We have enjoyed writing procedures about making and creating different things, as well as explaining how to play favourite games. Students have worked hard to ensure their instructions are easy for others to follow.
In Numeracy, we have been developing our problem-solving skills by solving a variety of worded problems. We have been learning to choose and use different strategies to help us find the answers, including the split strategy and the vertical algorithm.
We have also been exploring the concept of mass. Through hands on investigations, we have been comparing objects to determine which are heavier and lighter and using balance scales to measure and compare mass.
We discussed why it is important to choose suitable informal units, such as counters, blocks, or Unifix cubes, when measuring objects. We worked collaboratively to estimate, measure, and compare the mass of different classroom items, recording and discussing our findings.

In CBL, our Year 2 students have been learning how to care for Earth’s water, land, and air. They explored simple ways to help the environment by reducing, re‑using, and recycling materials to conserve our planet’s resources . Through hands-on activities and discussions, students began to understand how their everyday choices can make a positive difference.
To extend their learning, students took part in an exciting incursion in an immersive dome. During this experience, they learned about space, seasons and enjoyed a special tour of the night sky, where they explored stars, planets, and constellations. The night sky was displayed across the dome ceiling and matched our real date, time, and location, making it feel realistic and memorable.
This combination of learning about caring for Earth and exploring space helped spark curiosity and encouraged students to think more about the world around them.
In Personal and Social learning, we have been explored a range of topics that support our wellbeing, safety, and learning. We learned about National Sorry Day and reflected on the importance of understanding Australia's history and showing respect and empathy towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Students also discussed personal space and how respecting the boundaries of others helps everyone feel safe and comfortable. We identified five trusted adults we can talk to when we have a problem or concern and learned about the difference between safe and unsafe secrets.
In the classroom, students practised strategies for managing disruptions and distractions, choosing a good-fit learning spot, and being ready for learning. These lessons help students build positive relationships, make safe choices, and develop the confidence to seek support when needed.
Term 2
Week 4-5
In Literacy, we have been reading lots of information texts and answering comprehension questions. We have learnt how to find information in the text to answer literal questions by looking carefully for key facts and details.
In Writing, we have started the writing process again by planning, drafting, editing, and publishing our own information texts. We chose a seasons or weather topic to research and used our findings to organise information under subheadings. We then wrote factual sentences to teach the reader about our topic.
We also included other information text features we have been learning about, such as pictures, labelled diagrams, headings, and interesting facts to make our writing clear and engaging for readers. We are very proud of the effort we have put into creating informative and well-organised texts!
In Numeracy, we have been learning a range of strategies to help us solve addition and subtraction problems with confidence. We have been practising doubles and near doubles facts, as well as using partitioning/splitting numbers, bar models, and number lines to work through problems in different ways. We have also been developing our skills in solving worded problems by identifying important information and choosing the best strategy to find the answer. It has been wonderful to see everyone building confidence and explaining their mathematical thinking.

This fortnight in CBL, we have been exploring our amazing solar system and learning about the eight planets and their unique features. We researched selected planet and discovered interesting facts about its size, temperature, moons, and position in space.
Through discussions, videos, and inquiry tasks, we learnt that our solar system is made up of planets, moons, and stars, including our Sun. A key focus of this learning was understanding why the Earth is a special planet that can support life.
We explored how Earth has air, water, and suitable temperatures that help plants, animals, and humans survive and thrive. We also dig deeper into the phases of the moon and its importance of moon to earth These learning experiences encouraged curiosity, scientific thinking, and a deeper appreciation for our planet and the universe around us. We used this large amount of knowledge to make up our own planet.
In Personal and Social sessions, our students have been learning to identify their personal strengths, recognise strengths in others, and communicate respectfully.
Students have reflected on what they do well, such as being kind, creative, or persistent and have taken pride in sharing their achievements. Through activities like “My Superpower,” students have also practised recognising and celebrating the positive qualities of their peers.
We’ve seen students grow in confidence, work more positively together, and use respectful communication by listening carefully and expressing their ideas clearly.
This learning is helping students feel proud of who they are while building strong relationships both at school and at home.

Term 2
Week 1-3
Over the past few weeks in Literacy, our Grade 2 students have been exploring information texts and developing their understanding of how they are different from fiction texts.
In Reading, we have focused on identifying key features such as headings, subheadings, diagrams, captions, and labels, and discussing how these features help us to locate and understand important information.
In Writing, students have been applying this knowledge by creating their own information texts. They have each chosen a topic related to weather or seasons. Throughout the process, students have been researching their topics, organising their ideas under appropriate subheadings, and working on writing clear and informative sentences. They have also been encouraged to include features such as labelled diagrams and interesting facts to engage their readers.
In Numeracy we have been working on further developing our Place Value understasning. We have practised reading and writing up to fourdigit numbers and locating these numbers on a number line. We now understand that if we have a good understanding of the value of numbers, then this will help us count, add and subtract better.
We have also been learning about measurement and how to use informal units when measuring the length of objects. We have practised measuring, comparing and ordering the lengths of objects using informal units. We have also learnt that it is important to make accurate estimations of length and then measured these objects with informal units to check if we were accurate.
This term in Year 2 CBL, we have been busy learning all about our amazing planet Earth, the Sun, the Moon, and how seasons are created!
First, we discovered that Earth is always spinning. This spinning movement is called rotation. Earth spins around an invisible line called its axis. It takes one whole day for Earth to complete one full rotation. As Earth spins, we experience day and night.
We also learned about the Sun and the Moon. The Sun is a giant star that gives us light and heat. The Moon travels around Earth and can look different in the sky depending on how much sunlight shines on it.
We also learned how seasons are created. Earth moves around the Sun during the year. This movement is called orbiting. Earth’s axis is tilted, which means different parts of Earth get more or less sunlight during the year. When our part of Earth gets more sunlight, it is summer. When it gets less sunlight, it is winter. This is why we have four seasons: summer, autumn, winter, and spring.
Year 2 students have loved exploring space and learning how our world works. We are becoming wonderful young scientists!
In the first 3 weeks, and in Personal and Social learning, we learnt the process of developing important skills to help us play, communicate, and build positive relationships with others. We explored different games that can be played indoors and outdoors, learning the rules and expectations of games, and understanding how good choices support safe, fair, and enjoyable play. We also learnt about developmental play, including how to solve friendship or physical problems that may happen during games. Through role-play and discussions, we practised using respectful conversations, appropriate voice tone, kindness, and inviting others to join in play. A key focus of our learning is to be responsible while playing games by following rules, working cooperatively, and showing positive teamwork.
In RRRR, we learnt about positive relationships, respect, and personal boundaries in age-appropriate ways through scenarios. We explored what violence is, including gender-based violence, and understanding that the opposite of violence is respect through role play. We practised how to communicate clearly and respectfully using sentence starters such as “No thank you” or “I don’t want to play right now.” These lessons help us build confidence, understanding, and respectful communication skills to support healthy friendships and safe interactions with others.
