Literacy
In Term 4, students will continue to build their fluency and comprehension skills during the daily literacy block. Using the Explicit Direct Instruction approach, lessons remain clear, structured, and engaging, supporting students to develop confidence and mastery in reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Students will engage with a wide variety of text types while applying different reading strategies and practising oral reading skills with partner fluency reading.
This term, the writing focus will be on narrative, informative and persuasive texts. Through direct instruction, students will refine their skills across all stages of the writing process, including sentence structure, vocabulary, organisation, and editing. This will be demonstrated in their debating unit. They will also plan and design their yearbook pages, personal and team.
In spelling, students will continue with the Spelling Mastery program and explore word knowledge through activities that develop phonological (sounds), morphemic (meaning), orthographic (letters), and etymological (word origins) understanding. These activities will also extend their vocabulary and language awareness through structured word inquiries and language origin studies.
Mathematics: In Mathematics, students will take part in explicit teaching lessons that are differentiated as well as open-ended activities. Term 4 topics include: Shape, Number & Algebra, Data Representation & Interpretation, Money and Financial Mathematics and many more.
Science: In Term 4, the Year 6’s will be investigating energy from a variety of sources which can be used to generate electricity; electric circuits enable this energy to be transferred to another place and then to be transformed into another form of energy. They will study the differences between renewable and non-renewable energy - they will work with a group to present to the class about one type of renewable energy. Students will explore circuit features, for example, wires and switches, and electrical devices such as light globes, LED lights, solar lights and motors.
