Welcome to our Year 1 and 2 Home Learning website!
This site has been designed to support families in practising, consolidating and celebrating your child’s learning journey. Here, you will find a curated selection of literacy and numeracy activities that align closely with the skills and knowledge students are currently developing in the classroom.
Our goal is to provide meaningful, purposeful learning opportunities that reinforce classroom teaching while building confidence and independence at home. The activities are flexible and can be adapted to suit your child’s needs, interests and pace of learning.
We value the important role families play in supporting student growth and look forward to partnering with you as we work together to nurture a love of learning and celebrate each child’s progress.
Please see below for details regarding the expectations for Literacy and Numeracy home learning.
Each week, students are required to bring their reader pouch to school. During their library visit, they will select 5-6 new books to take home.
Students are expected to read daily for 10–15 minutes with a grown up. Regular reading practice builds fluency, confidence and comprehension. We are sure they will be excited to show you what they have been learning in the classroom!
After reading, please complete the Home Reading Journal (yellow book). An example of how to fill this in has been attached to support you.
Students will also have Literacy Goals to practise at home. Their current level will be sent home on a slip in their reader pouch, and the corresponding goal activity sheets can be found in the Literacy tab.
These sheets focus on practising specific sounds, decoding and high-frequency words. The aim is for students to read these words fluently and confidently. Mastery happens through repeated exposure and regular practise of the same words.
There is also a writing component to home learning. Students are encouraged to practise:
-Correct letter formation
-Spelling of focus words
-Writing simple sentences
Some literacy activities may require simple materials from home, such as pencils, paper, or a notebook, to support written responses and practice. These tasks are designed to reinforce learning and provide valuable opportunities for your child to develop their writing skills in a comfortable environment.
There is no expectation that completed written activities be returned to school for teacher review. Instead, they can be kept at home for your reference, allowing you to monitor your child’s progress, celebrate their growth, and revisit previous work as needed.
Students will be regularly monitored at school, and their level will be updated as they demonstrate mastery.
Establishing consistent homework routines early helps build strong learning habits and supports your child’s ongoing development. Thank you for your continued support at home.
As part of our Maths program, each student will be given individual Maths Fluency Goals to practise at home. These goals will focus on building speed, accuracy and confidence with key number skills.
Your child’s goal will be sent home in their reader bag, identified on a goal sheet outlining the specific skill they are working on.
To support practice at home, we have provided a range of simple and engaging games you can play together. These games are designed to help your child practise and master their goal in a fun and meaningful way. You will also find a QR code linked to short instructional videos or clear instructions outlining how to play each game.
Students will be regularly assessed at school to monitor their progress. Once they have demonstrated mastery of their current goal, a new goal will be introduced to continue extending their learning.
Even though your child may seem confident with these fluency tasks, it is important that they can demonstrate the skill consistently and independently. Mastery is not just about getting the right answer it is about being able to do it quickly, accurately and automatically, without needing to stop and think about each step. This level of fluency helps build confidence and allows students to focus on more complex learning.
All resources can be accessed by clicking on the relevant goal link.
Thank you for your support in helping your child build strong and confident maths skills!
The image the the left shows an example of the goal sheet that will be sent home from school. Your child’s teacher will indicate the specific goal your child is currently working towards by ticking the relevant box. This will guide you in selecting the appropriate links and activities provided on the website.
Teachers may also include additional notes on the sheet to highlight particular activities or strategies that will best support your child’s individual learning needs. Please refer to this goal sheet regularly to ensure home practice remains closely aligned with classroom learning.
