We don't know about you, but the Grade 3 teachers cannot believe it is already Term 4! What a year we have had so far, and there's still plenty to come. This term is all about assessing for reports and getting ready for Grade 4 (and all the usual fantastic learning of course!). We hit the ground running last week with a visit from Marie from Bunnings to plant some natives in the garden beds behind our building. This was a fantastic way to wrap up our eco warrior Inquiry unit from Term 3 (thank you to Mr Williams for organising). Speaking of Inquiry, we hope you enjoyed our Inquiry open afternoon last term. It was wonderful to see so many parents attending to see the fantastic work our students produced last term. They did a brilliant job of their presentations where they told us all about their ideas about being an eco warrior and we're sure you agree their tote bag designs were excellent.
Next up is swimming, with 3B and 3H attending in week 3, followed by 3G and 3T in week 4. Then we have a short (but busy) week in week 5 with a curriculum day on Monday followed by Melbourne Cup Day public holiday on the Tuesday. We'll be further investigating this term's Inquiry unit that week with a science incursion to learn more about how the Earth works. In addition to that, week 5 also includes our school disco. Other events coming up this term include the all important Promotion Parade, our annual trip to the movies, Templeton Carols and class parties to celebrate an amazing year in Grade 3. More info will come home closer to each event. For now, we focus on swimming. Please remember to pack a towel, underwear to change into, goggles (if your child has them, not neccesary), thongs or slides to wear to and from the pool (school shoes and socks must be worn to school), a plastic bag to put wet items in and maybe an extra snack as swimming can make the students quite hungry. Please also ensure all items are named (including underwear) as they can go missing or be misplaced.
We look forward to a fantastic Term 4 in Grade 3!
Wow, we're already half way through Week 6, we can't believe it! That being said, our term has been jam packed and we've definintely had lots of fun, excitement and learning mixed in.
Week 4 saw some students complete the ICAS English assessment and the exciting opening of our Grade 3/4 basketball court. We had some giants (in the form of South-East Melbourne Phoenix players) visit to take on our Grade 5/6 Hoop Time stars in some very entertaining games. Some of our teachers even got involved with a 3-point shoot out which unfortunately didn't go too well (our teachers didn't get a chance to warm up like the Phoenix players 😜). There was lots of noise and cheering as we urged on our school teams and were wowed by the skills (including some epic dunks) of the Phoenix players.
Last week was all about the books. Book Week 2025 was another fantastic Templeton Primary School event with Tony Bones popping in for a visit with his show about General Waste by Michel Streich and our annual Book Week dress up parade. Tony Bones was entertaining as always, really bringing the book to life and getting everyone involved in the performance. The Book Week parade saw lots of Hogwarts students and K-pop demon hunters amongst the plethora of fantastic costumes on display.
This week has been somewhat quiet with our only timetable change being the ICAS Maths assessment. There is a great buzz of excitement around the school as we're seeing our new playground pop up next to the Grade 4 classrooms, it looks amazing!
There's still plenty to come over the next three weeks with a curriculum day next Friday (don't forget!), inquiry presentations and open afternoon, Hoop Time, AFL Roadshow and footy dress up day all still to come. Don't forget to fill in your swimming survey if you haven't yet (must be completed for children to participate in the swimming program next term), and check Xuno to make sure you have provided permission and payment (if required) for swimming, AFL Roadshow and Hoop Time if your child will be participating.
Lastly, we are extrmely happy to share that Mrs Brown has had her baby girl, Morgan, born on Wednesday. We all can't wait for her to pop in for a visit!
The Grade 3s had a fantastic day at Melbourne Zoo on Tuesday. We crammed in as much animal spotting as we could in the time we were there and all had some wonderful experiences with the animals. Highlights were the Butterfly House, Lion Gorge and the Reptile House but it was definitely difficult for our students to pick their favourite. Once again, the teachers were proud of how well behaved and respectful our students were out in public.
Thank you all for your time during parent-teacher interview week last week. We enjoy the opportunity to inform you of how well your children are going at school, we hope you're proud of their achievements because we certainly are! With the first semester of Grade 3 being quite an adjustment from Grade 2 we really look forward to Semester 2 when the Grade 3s really hit their stride.
Believe it or not, as of this Friday afternoon we will be one third of the way through Term 3! It's already flying by and with lots still to come, it will be over before we know it! Next week will see ICAS English occurring Tuesday and the opening of our Grade 3/4 basketball court Thursday afternoon with some special guests from Melbourne Phoenix. The following week is book week, so make sure you're planning ahead for dress up day which is on the Friday. As always, we don't want families to feel like they need to go out and spend money on a costume, we'd much rather you get creative with things you already have at home, we can't wait to see what our students come up with!
1, 2, 3, Naira you sit in the front seat. Is everyone ready said the bus driver, and we were off! It was a really fun day but I can't decide which one is my favourite. Everything was my favourite but my actual favourite was the butterfly house and the red pandas. I love the butterfly house because one of the butterflies went on my backpack and the butterflies looked so colourful and beautiful. I loved the red pandas because they were adorable, cute and they were sleeping. Naira
On Tuesday the sixth of August the grade threes went to the zoo. My favourite part was the platypus and Lion Gorge. We got a great view of the platypus because it swam right in front of us. My favourite part in the Lion Gorge was the snow leopard. I still like it even though we didn't get a good view. At the end of the day I was very tired. Felix
Yesterday the year 3s went on an excursion to Melbourne Zoo. It was a hard choice to choose my favourite, but I liked the butterfly house, the red pandas, the squirrel monkeys and the Japanese garden. The special part was when we came to the squirrel monkey enclosure the monkeys were coming up to us like they're saying hello to us! We had a great day at the zoo but I mostly liked the butterfly house. I would love to go again!! Clara
We welcome everyone back for another fantastic term in Grade 3. As you would have seen (and heard) last week, there have been a lot of changes around the school over the holiday break. The biggest changes are the COLA outdoor covering over the basketball court, and the surfacing of the new basketball court. We're sure you agree that these both look fantastic and are a great addition to our school! Some smaller changes have been a new retaining wall at the back of the grade 2/3 building, new carpet in 3G and 3H (3B and 3T coming next term), and new classroom desks to compliment our new chairs. We are so lucky to have such fantastic facilities to support learning at Templeton PS and cannot wait for the next installment - the new playground!
In Grade 3 our biggest change has been Mrs Brown leaving for maternity leave. We wish her all the best and cannot wait to hear the big news when her bundle of joy arrives. We are excited to welcome Mr Williams to the team for the remainder of the year and we hear that 3B is very happy to have him as their new teacher.
This term will speed by as it is the shortest of the year and as always we have plenty in store for our Grade 3 students. Parent teacher interviews are happening this week (check XUNO for a message from your classroom teacher with the Webex link). Next week is our second excursion for the year as we head to Melbourne Zoo to learn more about being eco warriors (keep your fingers crossed for good weather). We also have ICAS, Book Week, a Curriclum Day, Hoop Time and the AFL Roadshow. We're excited to go full steam ahead with our students who are now closer to Grade 4 than Grade 2!
We had a fantastic day for Halway Day yesterday! The students enjoyed being in half school uniform to particpate in lots of half activities and of course the highlight was the pizza lunch! It was so great for us to be able to all celebrate together with our declicious pizzas, juice, twin poles and kit kats! It was a great opportunity for all of our grade threes to come together and simply enjoy each others' company (more photos in the gallery). Another interesting fact about being halfway is that we've just passed the halfway point between 2000 and 2050.
We're so proud of how far our grade three students have come this year, they have learned so much this semester and have grown both inside and out.
We hope everyone enjoys the holiday break. We look forward to meeting with you all after the holidays for our parent teacher interviews, the portal will open first day back so don't forget to book in. There is also a swimming survey on Xuno from Mr Maroney for everyone to fill in please. Enjoy the holidays, stay warm and look after yourselves, we'll see you on Monday 21st July!
As we've sped through Term 2, the daylight hours have become shorter and shorter and winter has well and truly hit with very chilly mornings and nights. This Saturday marked the passing of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. We look forward to getting more sunlight into our days from here out but we haven't seen the coldest weather yet, so make sure students are staying warm and looking after themselves to try to prevent colds and sickness. As much as we love seeing our students at school every day, it is important to keep them at home when they are sick to prevent spreading it to their classmates and teachers, we want everyone at school to stay healthy!
Our students are currently wrapping up our Term 2 Inquiry unit about Australia. They have enjoyed learning about what it means to be Australian and finding out more about our states and territories, major cities and landmarks. They are creating a triorama about a landmark around Australia and we can't wait to see the finished products!
Next week is the last week of Term 2 and we have some great events happening within Grade 3 and the school. The students can't wait for Halfway Day on Thursday, celebrating being half way through their primary school education. We're going to have a fantastic day doing lots of half activities and of course enjoying our pizza lunch. Students can wear half their school uniform for the day, so they can choose to wear free dress on top with their school pants, or free dress on the bottom with their school t-shirt and jumper/jacket. Some students are also keen to style their hair half one way and half another, and even wear mismatched shoes and socks. We are encouraging our students to get into the spirit of the day so we can all have fun enjoying the celebration, you're only half way through primary school once!
On Friday next week the whole school is having a free dress day as part of our Student Council fundraising efforts. This term they are raising funds and donations for the RSPCA. Students can wear free dress for the day and either bring in a gold coin or a gently used towel or sheet to donate (please only bring these on the day as we don't have room to store them). We're sure this will be another successful fundrasing effort by our Student Council, helping some animals in need. This is the last day of term so there will be an early dismissal at 2:30, so please make arrangements for early pick up or book in with our OSHC program.
The library has been a buzz of activity since Friday with the opening of our Book Fair! Students have been enjoying browsing the collection during library sessions and are enthusiastically entering competitions to try to win prizes. The Book Fair will be open until after school on Wednesday this week (28th) so there's still plenty of time to visit before or after school to grab some goodies.
Today our Grade Three students participated in National Simultaneous Storytime. We, along with over 2 million children across the country, enjoyed the book The Truck Cat read by the author Deborah Frenkel, livestreamed from Springvale Library. It was lots of fun to take part in such a huge event together with so many people across the country at the same time (including Templeton Grade One students). It was great to hear an author read their story to us, and we also had a quick drawing lesson from the illustrator, Danny Snell.
We don't know about you, but the teachers can't believe we're at the end of week four and half way through May already! The beginning of the term has gone smoothly and between public holidays, special events and our excursion the first four weeks have passed very quickly.
The students are excited about the Book Fair arriving and can't wait to check it out in their library lessons next week to create some epic wishlists (we have of course told them to respect your wishes in relation to purchases but also encourage your support of the Book Fair if you're able as it's a great fundraiser for our school library).
Our excursion to the city last week was quite simply amazing! The weather was absolutely perfect with the sun shining down on us all day. We split into two groups to head up to the Skydeck at Eureka Tower to get a birds-eye-view of Melbourne and spot its many landmarks. We explored the Southbank area, strolled past the Arts Centre and National Gallery of Victoria, stopped by Flinders Street Station and Federation Square before travelling through Birrarung Marr to the Sports Precinct where we participated in a tour of the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) with a volunteer tour guide from the Melbourne Cricket Club. We learned tons of interesting facts about the grounds and history of the MCG, were able to go behind the scenes to explore the changerooms, media room and MCC members area, and the highlight for many students was being able to go down to the ground and touch the hallowed grass. The excursion was a wonderful way to engage our students in our Inquiry topic whilst also giving them the opportunity to experience some of the fantastic sights of our capital city.
We hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break and the Easter holiday. It sounds like lots of families took part in some fantastic activities, as our students were keen to share what they got up to in their holiday recounts.
Term 2 is off to a flying start! We jumped straight back into everything last week even though it was a very short week. The Grade 3s showed wonderful respect at their first ANZAC Day ceremony Thursday. We learned a lot about why we commemorate on this day and were fortunate to hear from some special guests, including our very own Mr Dawson whose great uncle served our country in World War I.
We can't believe it's the end of week 2 already, there's so much happening this term that it really makes the time fly! Today we are all meeting Adrian Beck to learn about his experience as an author and gain some tips and tricks to help in our own writing, particularly inspiration for story ideas.
We are so excited about our first excursion next week! We are going to be journeying up to the observation deck at Eureka Tower so that we can get a birds eye view of the city and see all the landmarks that make Melbourne unique. Then we'll be heading over to one of Melbourne's most iconic landmarks, the MCG, to go on a tour and find out all about it. The forecast is showing we may possibly experience a little rain, so please keep an eye on the weather apps. It is advisable to be prepared with a raincoat (no umbrellas please) and suitable footwear (waterproof if possible). Students are advised not to bring their school bag, just a small backpack that will fit their snack, lunch and drink bottle.
Next week also brings the Mother's Day stall to Templeton PS. This is a fantastic event every year where students have the opportunity to purchase something special for their mum or someone special to them. Items available for puchase are on display outside the library. Please send your child to school with a small amount of money and a shopping bag next Thursday so they can make a purchase.
Speaking of mothrers, we are extremely happy to announce our very own Mrs Brown is expecting her first child and will be a mother by the end of the year! We're sure you join us in congratulating Mrs Brown and wishing her all the best as she prepares for the new arrival. She will continue with 3B until the end of term 2 and Mr Williams will be taking over for the second half of the year.
Other upcoming events this term include the Book Fair, a curriculum day after the Kings Birthday public holiday, and our special Halfway Day. Keep your eye on the calendar and blog which will be updated regularly, and of course our newsletter always contains upcoming events and news. Have a great weekend!
It has been a huge first term of 2025 for our Grade 3 students and they are definitely deserving of a relaxing break over the holidays! We are so proud of what they have achieved this term, they have really grown up from Grade 2 students into Grade 3 students.
THANK YOU to all of the parents who visited our classes over the last few weeks to introduce us to their culture. We are so grateful you took the time to come in to share with us and believe that these visits are some of our best incursions! Thank you also to all of the parents and family members who attended our Inquiry open afternoon. It was so wonderful to see such a big buzzing crowd gathered in the Grade 3 classrooms admiring the hard work out students put into their culture posters. We had lots of fantastic feedback, not only from parents but also Mr McKinlay who was impressed by both the work of our students and the support and encouragement from our community of families.
House Athletics Day was a wonderful (and tiring!) way to finish the term. It's always great to see how much fun our Grade 3 students have on this day, being their first time attending. They all participated in every activity with a positive attitude and good sportsmanship and will surely be looking forward to doing it all again next year.
We wish all of our students and families a wonderful break. Enjoy the time you have to spend together and we wish you safe travels if you are one of the lucky families heading away for a holiday. A reminder that the first day back next term is Tuesday 22nd April due to the Easter Monday public holiday. All of our tired teachers will be well rested and ready for another fantastic term with our Grade 3 students.
Mia certainly thinks so. This is her persuasive text about why all families should own a pet:
I strongly believe that all families should own pets. A pet is an animal that lives in your house and you take care of it. The three main reasons why you should own a pet is because it teaches responsibility, it reduces loneliness and you'll become healthier.
Firstly, all families should own a cute, cuddly pet because it teaches responsibility. You'll need to exercise it daily and your little pup will grow happy and strong. Being responsible is a key to life. If you were not responsible you would lose things and lose track of time. Would you want to be sleepy and tired at 8am in the morning?
Secondly, a cute cuddly animal would certainly cheer you up! Imagine you just lost a match which was REALLY important and a cute little hamster comes bounding over! That cute little furball would definitely cheer you up and maybe it'll even make you forget about your troubles and make you happy again!
Finally, all families should own pets because you'll become healthier. You'll need to exercise an animal and who knows? You might as well exercise too! Nobody sits on a smelly old couch all day, I absolutely insist that you go for a walk. Who wants to sit on a smelly old couch?
In conclusion, all families should own a pet because it teaches responsibility, reduces loneliness and stress and you'll become healthier. So go buy a pet today!
We can't believe it but the end of Term One is quickly approaching! With just one more week left here are a few reminders:
Inquiry Open Afternoon: we would love to see parents and families/friends on Tuesday afternoon between 3:00 and 3:30pm to celebrate the fantastic work our Grade 3 students have been doing in Inquiry this term. This has been a wonderful afternoon in the past and ties in very nicely with our Inquiry topic for the term which is celebrating the diversity of our community. The students have been working very hard the past couple of weeks to produce their best work and are looking forward to sharing their posters about their culture with you.
House Athletics Day: Thursday is our Year 3-6 House Athletics Day. This is something the Grade 3 students particularly look forward to as it is their first time attending and it is a fantastic event. Students need to wear their house colours for the day and need a small backpack packed with their lunch, snack, drink bottle, hat and sunscreen. Students must be at school by 8:45am so that we can arrive to the track on time and therefore arrive back to school on time at the end of the day. Parents are welcome to come down to Ringwood Athletics Track during the day to see their child participate. We still have a few students who don't have permission on XUNO so please check you have done this ASAP.
Last day of term: Friday is our last day for the term and we will be dismissing children at 2:30pm. Please ensure you have made appropriate arrangements for your child to be picked up early this day.
Rainbow Day: Friday is also our first fundraiser for the year. The Student Representative Council have arranged for a rainbow day which will see a rainbow of colour hit the school. The Grade 3s designated colour is GREEN so please support your child in finding something green to wear for the day (no need to go to the shops, hopefully you can find something in wardrobes at home or borrow from a friend or family member for the day). We will be raising money for the Royal Children's Hospital, so please send a gold coin donation to school with your child next Friday for this very worthy cause.
We're looking forward to a fantastic week to finish off what has been a very productive Term One!
It has been so wonderful seeing our school embrace Harmony Day today and seeing all the fantastic cultural outfits Templeton students have worn to celebrate. We are so happy that this day ties in so beautifully with our Term 1 Inquiry unit and is a great way to acknowledge our multicultural community as we look forward to sharing our Inquiry projects in a couple of weeks.
We'd like to congratulate all of our Grade 3 students on their fantastic efforts the past couple of weeks as they have tackled NAPLAN and an interrupted schedule. We are proud of the resilience they have demonstrated and were happy to see them taking on everything with a smile.
Our Grade 3 students have had a fantastic start to NAPLAN this week. They embraced their creative writing side yesterday, completing a narrative about An Amazing Ride. We followed up with the reading assessment today, our first online test, which went very smoothly. This puts us officially half way through NAPLAN, with Language Conventions to come Tuesday followed by Numeracy on Thursday.
As our Inquiry unit comes to an end we have some exciting events coming up. Next week is Harmony Week, a week to celebrate our diversity in Australia and the Grade 3s have encouraged the school to take part by wearing cultural dress or orange (the official colour for Harmony Week) next Friday. This tradition started with the Grade 3s wearing some orange to celebrate, and spread through the school last year. It was so great to see our many cultures represented through clothing all through the school and we're looking forward to seeing it again next Friday. If you would like to know more about Harmony Week, you can follow this link. We will then be finishing the term with visits from parents (thank you to those who have volunteered) to share their culture, completing and presenting our culture posters in classes, finishing with our open afternoon where we welcome all families in to see what the students have created.
Speaking of culture, we wish families celebrating Holi this weekend a wonderful weekend of celebrations with your families and friends, होलीकी शुभकामनाएँ !
We have hit the half way mark of term one and the Grade 3 teachers are noticing that we have a lot of tired looking students in our classes. They are struggling to stay focussed and get the most out of their learning time. This has resulted in disruptive classrooms and less than ideal working conditions.
Through some minor detective work, we have realised that a lot of our Grade 3 students are going to sleep a lot later than we think is appropriate for children of their age, and there are a lot of students using screens late into the night. These two things have a huge impact on their ability to get enough rest and arrive at school each day ready to learn.
Sleep is vital for kids' health, development and wellbeing. It helps them to stay healthy, grow, learn and do well in school. Sleep physically restores their body, improves brain function and mental health. Kids of all ages need to get enough sleep so they can play, learn and concentrate during the day. Not getting enough sleep can have a big impact on your kids - behaviourally, mentally and emotionally. (kidshelpline.com.au)
We encourage you to read this article from the Sleep Health Foundation about sleep, in particular the use of technology prior to bed time. There are some useful links for more information on the third page if you would like to find out more.
This website also contains some fantastic information about sleep for children: https://raisingchildren.net.au/school-age/sleep
We are excited to have our first incursion tomorrow with Wanyara. This is following on from our Inquiry lesson this week where we learned about how the cultures in our community have changed over time. Did you know we have 126 different cultures represented in the Knox community? For our incursion we will be going back to the beginning to learn about the culture of the first people in our community, Indigenous Australians.
As part of our ongoing exploration of culture and diversity, we have allocated extra homework for Inquiry this week. We are asking students to answer some questions about their own culture, they may need some assistance from you to answer some of the questions. We are also asking children to bring a photo to school of themselves participating in something from their culture; this could be a celebration, food, learning, wearing cultural dress or participating in a religious ceremony. We will be using these homework items in our week 6 lesson and Term 1 Inquiry project, so please ensure they are completed by Tuesday next week.
Continuing with Inquiry, this Saturday is Knox Fest, a local community event where Knox's cultural diversity is on display and we can find out lots of ways we can get involved in our local community. It is a fantastic event and a great opportunity for our students to explore what Knox has to offer and bring Inquiry into real life by seeing how different cultures are represented and contributing to our local community. The website here will provide you with all the important details.
You will have received notification from our Director of Curriculum, Aidan Schanssema about an upcoming webinar this week about NAPLAN. He will be providing you with all the information you need to understand NAPLAN and what it looks like for our Grade 3 students. There will be an opportunity for you to ask questions should you have any. If you are unable to attend Friday a recording will be made available to you.
Thank you for your participation in our Parent-Teacher Interviews this week, it has been great to meet you and have a chat about how your child is settling in to Grade 3. It is a big step up from Grade 2, both in workload and responsibility, but we are so happy with how our classes have begun the year and are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning ahead.
Speaking of what's ahead, we have plenty of events coming up in the second half of the term, starting with Cross Country tomorrow (Fri 21st Feb). Students will need to be at school at 8:50am to drop their bag off at their classroom before heading to assembly because we will go straight from there to the oval. Students are encouraged to wear a t-shirt in their house colour. Parents are more than welcome to stay after assembly to cheer on their child as they make their way around the course or over the finish line. Please ensure your child has their hat (and sunscreen) and drink bottle as it will be warm and they will need them!
Other events coming up include an incursion next week, school photos, NAPLAN and House Athletics. All dates are on the calendar and notes will be up on XUNO over the course of the next few weeks.
We are working on correct letter formation in our classes to prepare our students for joined writing later in the year. If you would like to learn more about Victorian Modern Cursive, you can access the Victorian Department of Education page (where you can download fonts for the computer and the following handwriting formation charts) below:
This week has the Grade Threes in full swing as all our programs are now operating. Students have begun Literacy and Numeracy support groups, Accelerated Reader and take-home reading. Maths Groups, homework, Gifted Insights and 3/4 Sport are all beginning this week also!
We ask that you please make sure you are checking Xuno regularly as there are many start-of-year permissions we need from you. As we are regularly using computers now, we need to have the Computer & Internet Agreement signed ASAP. The Local Excursion Agreement is also important as it is required for students to participate in our upcoming Cross Country event. The PG Rated Multimedia Notice will support our use of multimedia both in our lessons and if we have students inside during extreme weather lunch times. We are also in the process of locking in our first incursion within the next month so will requre permission for students to participate.
Parent Teacher interviews are next week so please use the portal on Xuno to sign up for a time to meet with your child's teacher. As always, please use Xuno to notify teachers of absences.
The Grade 3 teachers are very happy with how our students have settled in to the new school year!
We are currently getting to know our classes and setting expectations for the year ahead. We appreciate those who have already labelled items in pencil cases, it makes things a lot easier if something is misplaced! We also appreciate those who have already provided a box of tissues for the classroom and are organised with their satchels, library bags and art smocks.
Library borrowing begins this week. We are in the process of assessing students in reading so they can begin the Accelerated Reader program, this will assist with borrowing from the library as well as take home reading. We are also completing assessments in spelling, writing and maths this week, so we can get to know our students better and provide them with opportunities to improve. This will inform our maths groups which begin next week, as well as Literacy Boost and Maths Extension, also beginning next week. Next week will also see our home reading and homework programs starting.
As you can see, it is full steam ahead for our grade three students!
The teachers have been hard at work getting ready for the new school year and are very excited to be welcoming back our grade three students on Wednesday 29th January! We are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning together.
Please check back regularly for updates, particularly on our calendar page as new events arise.
There will be plenty of information coming home over the coming weeks to help get the year off to a great start. The local excursion and ICT premission forms are already available on XUNO so we appreciate you completing those ASAP.
