RENDERING
Rendering is the process of creating the effects of light, shade and light source to achieve contrast in drawings. rendering improves the quality of line drawings. while line drawing indicate more of the shape than the form of an object drawn, rendering improves the quality of the drawing so as to give it a photo- realistic quality.
The basic types of rendering techniques are hatching, crosshatching, scribbling and stippling.Â
When rendering to create tone, it is important to consider where the light would be coming from, and how this would affect the object. What areas would be light? what areas would be darker? where would the shadows fall?
A good method to use when rendering, regardless of the media or renderinng method, is to create a tonal scale.
In your sketchbook you are going to show your understanding of all the rendering techniques by creating a value scale of each rendering type.
You must include a light to dark scale of all of these rendering techniques:
Soft Pencil Shading
Dot rendering
Hatching
Cross Hatching
Scumbling
There are multiple ways to apply texture and create a tonal range in an image.
Soft Pencil Shading:
The easiest way of producing tones on a drawing. Careful shading with a pencil can produce realistic effects. DO NOT USE your finger to blend the pencil, to smudge your shading, use a blending stump instead.
Dot Rendering:
Uses small points/dots to create tone - the dots are placed close together to create dark tones and further apart to create the lighter areas.
Hatching and Cross-hatching:
Hatching - Uses lines going in one direction to create tone - the lines are placed close together to create dark tones and further apart to create the lighter areas.
Cross Hatching - Uses lines crossing over each other in two directions to create tone - the lines are placed close together to create dark tones and further apart to create the lighter areas.
Dot Rendering/Stippling:
Uses small points/dots to create tone - the dots are placed close together to create dark tones and further apart to create the lighter areas.
Scribble Rendering/Scumbling:
Uses small scribbles to create tone - the scribbles are placed close together and over each other to create dark tones and further apart to create the lighter areas.
Draw a sphere showing each of the drawing techniques and a light source.
To create a light source you apply the tone to the sphere/object:
The LIGHTEST section is on the side closest to the source, this is the HIGHLIGHT
MIDTONES surrounds the highlight
and a SHADOW created with the darkest tones on the object, extend yourself and try creating a cast shadow as well!!
