Assessment tasks are an integral part of the Preliminary Year course, and the following procedures must be followed to minimise the possibility of a student being awarded a zero mark for non-submission of a task by the due date:
Planned Absences:
Students who know in advance that they will be absent on the day of submission or attempt of an assessment task must:
Approach the Head Teacher HSIE (John-Paul van Schie) before the scheduled task date.
notify the relevant teacher in writing at least seven (7) days prior to the due date.
Provide relevant documentation to support their absence.
School-Related Activities:
Students who will be absent due to school-related activities must notify their class teacher and the Head Teacher in advance to negotiate a submission plan. These activities include:
Mandatory work placement
School musicals or Rock Eisteddfods
School sporting competitions or events
Other related school activities, such as debating or drama performances
If the reasons are acceptable, the task must be completed either:
Before the scheduled date; or
Within two school days of the student’s return, as approved by the Principal.
Failure to provide a minimum of seven days’ notice may result in the student:
Being required to complete the task as originally scheduled, or
Not being eligible for an adjustment or alternative task, and
Potentially being awarded a zero mark if the task is not completed as required.
Unacceptable Grounds for Illness/Misadventure
The provisions for Illness/Misadventure are designed to support students impacted by circumstances beyond their control. Applications for Illness/Misadventure generally will not be approved in the following cases:
Attendance at a family holiday or social occasion.
Matters avoidable by the student, such as misreading or misinterpreting assessment task deadlines, examination timetables, or instructions.
Loss of work due to technology failure, where appropriate back-up procedures were not followed.
Booking of a driver’s licence test or related non-medical appointment during scheduled school hours or assessment periods.
Claims for Illness/Misadventure based on these grounds may be denied. If denied, students may be required to complete the original assessment task as scheduled or risk being awarded a zero mark.
Students are advised to plan carefully and meet all assessment requirements as outlined in the school’s assessment schedule.
Unplanned Absences on the Day of a Task:
If a student is unexpectedly absent on the day of an assessment task (e.g., class test, oral presentation):
A medical certificate or other documentation must be submitted to the Head Teacher HSIE (John-Paul van Schie) upon the student’s return to school.
The student can complete a misadventure form, and consideration may be given by the Principal to authorising a substitute task or an estimate.
If approved, the task must be completed within two school days of the student’s return, unless varied by the Principal.
Examination Absences:
If a student is absent on the day of an examination:
A medical certificate or other documentation must be submitted to the Head Teacher HSIE upon the student’s return.
The student can complete a misadventure form, and consideration may be given by the Principal to authorising a substitute task or an estimate.
The examination will be rescheduled within two days of the student’s return or, in exceptional circumstances, at the Principal’s discretion.
Submission of Work:
If a student is absent on the due date of a submission task (e.g., research project or fieldwork report):
If the work cannot be brought to school by another person, the student must personally submit:
A medical certificate or other documentation to the Head Teacher HSIE (John-Paul van Schie).
The assigned work to the class teacher upon their return.
The student can complete a misadventure form, and consideration may be given by the Principal to authorising a substitute task or an estimate.
Parents may be notified of missed assessment tasks if deemed appropriate.
Late Arrival for Tasks:
If a student arrives late for an assessment task, they will be allowed to enter and attempt the task.
No extension of time will be granted for late arrivals.
NOTE: In the event of industrial stoppages, evacuations, or any other occurrence that prevents an assessable task from being completed on a particular day, that task will be scheduled for the next available timetabled lesson in that subject.
