Welcome to the class
Duration: 00:24In this lesson, we will be using the nursery rhyme, 'The Lion and the Unicorn'.
You might remember this from when you were younger.
We'll be using this rhyme to explore rhythm and body percussion.
Are you ready to battle?
You'll need:
space to move around and dance safely
paper and coloured pencils or textas.
Watch the video 'The Lion and the Unicorn' to learn the words.
Be sure to sing out loud!
Once you know the rhyme, try dancing like a fighting unicorn and lion.
Don't forget to sing along at the same time!
The Lion and the Unicorn
Duration: 01:25Let's try adding some body percussion to the rhyme.
Watch the Bass drum video and try to stamp your foot with the bass drum.
Keep practising until you are in time with the bass drum.
Bass drum
Duration: 00:31Watch the Tambourine video and see if you can clap in time with the tambourine as you say the rhyme.
Hint: the clap is always on the last word of each line – crown, town, brown, town.
Tambourine
Duration: 00:38Can you clap and stamp at the same time?
Watch again and stamp with the bass drum and clap with the tambourine.
Keep trying – it is trickier than it looks!
We're now going to create puppets for our rhyme.
Using textas, crayons, coloured pencils or paint draw the characters from the rhyme:
the lion
the unicorn
the crown
You may like to include other characters from the video.
Cut out your drawings of your characters.
Glue or tape sticks to the back of your drawings to create puppets. Maybe you could use an ice cream stick, a ruler or a stick from outside.
Use them as puppets to act out the story. Who wins the crown?
Perform your puppet show for an audience.
Write a recount of the battle. Make sure your recount is full of suspense. Who wins? Keep us guessing!
Draw pictures to go with your recount of the battle.
Congratulations. You win the crown!
