Reflect in lines parallel to the axes

Have you finished early? Are you ready for an extra challenge?

It gets more tricky when we reflect in lines that are not axes.

  1. Use the line tool to create a vertical line through the point (2, 0).
  2. Using the point tool, plot A = (1, 3).
  3. Reflect A in the vertical line you created in step 4.
    • Click on A.
    • Click on the reflect tool.
    • Click on the vertical line.
  4. Using the point tool, plot B = (–1, 1).
  5. Using the reflect tool, reflect B in the vertical line.
  6. Using the move tool, drag points A and B. Notice how A' and B' are the reflection of A and B in the vertical line.
  7. Using the point tool, plot C = (1, 5).
  8. Predict the coordinates of C', the reflection of C in the vertical line. Use the reflect tool to check your answer.
  9. Using the point tool, plot D = (–3, –1).
  10. Predict the coordinates of D', the reflection of D in the vertical line. Use the reflect tool to check your answer.
  11. Create a horizontal line through the point (0, 3).
  12. Plot at least three points. Predict the coordinates when they are reflected in the horizontal line. Use the reflect tool to check your answers.
