Activity 3

Dip netting and food chains

Complete pages 9 and 10 in the student fieldwork booklet for this section.

Dip netting

Watch the following video on dip netting. Find out how to dip net and why we actually do it.

In the past, Fishing Bats inhabited the local area, feeding from the creeks. Are there any fish in the wetlands which could provide food for the Fishing Bat? Are there any food sources for fish in the wetlands?

Waterbugs at Blacktown Showground

What can you find? Use the water bug detective guide below to help you to identify the bugs.

Could these bugs be food for fish?

Fill out page 9 of your work book. What do your results tell you about the health of the aquatic environment in the wetland?

Food Chains

Watch the YouTube below to find out more about food chains. Then, on page 10, have a go at drawing a local food chain for the Blacktown Showground wetlands. Keep in mind what you have already discovered about the habitat (trees, grasses, water plants), the water bugs, birds and even the Fishing Bat. Remember to start your food chain with the sun!
