In order to successfuly qualify in your Bronze award, you will need to undertake a 3 day combination practice and qualifying adventure with the school.
This will involve a day of learning navigation skills, camp craft, team cooking routines, camp hygene and understanding behaviour expectations.
Day 2 and Day 3 will be your overnight hike through the wilderness carrying everything on your back. You will also be carrying an item of team equipment, like a tent, cooking gear, fuel, toilet bag or washing up kit. You will take all of your rubbish with you in your pack.
You will navigate in pairs, using a compass, map and landform recognition.
You will be climbing hills with your pack, and descending into gullies.
You will be camping in established campsites with water, toilets and ability to have a campfire if conditions permit.
To qualify and be signed off as having completed the journey, you are expected to demonstrate the highest standards of behaviour, teamwork and dedication. Most students understand this and are happy to help their group throughout the adventure. They speak to each other in a friendly and kind way, and are cooperative with their outdoor guide and supervising teacher. Some students need reminding to be cooperative and respectful. If you require ongoing management for inappropriate or disruptive behaviour, you will not qualify and not complete your award.
