This week students will explore the working scientifically skills related to designing and conducting practical investigations by making slime.
Note: To complete this investigation students may need to purchase or be supplied with cornflour, shampoo and food colouring.
Students:
revise the skills needed for conducting investigations
gather equipment and conduct a simple experiment
evaluate the results and create a conclusion based on their aim and hypothesis
explore or review some properties of matter.
Outcomes:
SC4-6WS: follow a sequence of instructions to safely undertake a range of investigation types.
SC4-7WS: process and analyse data to identify trends, patterns and relationships and draw conclusions.
SC4-9WS: present science ideas, findings and information to a given audience using appropriate scientific language, text types and representations.
SC4-16CW: describes the observed properties and behaviour of matter, using scientific models and theories about the motion and arrangement of particles
These activities have been adapted from the following NSW Department of Education created resources:
Students undertake short activities to practise the skills of observation, describing and recording.
Outcomes:
SC4-7WS: process and analyse data to identify trends, patterns and relationships and draw conclusions.
SC4-9WS: present science ideas, findings and information to a given audience using appropriate scientific language, text types and representations.
Students record an aim and hypothesis, gather and list materials and review the method in order to conduct an investigation in part 3.
Outcomes:
SC4-6WS: follow a sequence of instructions to safely undertake a range of investigation types.
SC4-9WS: present science ideas, findings and information to a given audience using appropriate scientific language, text types and representations.
