This lesson deepens student understanding of how to use non-finite clauses to improve their writing. Students examine a short story to learn how authors control and use a variety of clause structures. Students analyse sentence patterns and create their own imitations of author sentence patterns.

Students read the first chapter of a novel of their own choice. They locate and add specific non-finite clause sentence patterns to their writer’s palette task.

Students use sentences from their writer's palette task to create posters. They may use interactive web tools such as Adobe Spark, or Canva to create their poster. The poster can also be created offline.

In this lesson, student create a composition based on the short story. This success criteria for the composition is based on the use of the specific structures the students have mastered during the previous four lessons.
