The Ryde Community inFocus is a simple way of communicating some insights and observations from the weeks past. It is written to celebrate and share the work that we do and to connect with community around some thoughts and insights into the learning culture at Ryde Public School.
Our School Vision
Lifelong learners- How good can we be? Strive today, succeed tomorrow
At Ryde Public School we believe that every student should be challenged to learn and continually improve in a respectful, inclusive and engaging environment of high expectations.
Our vision is to be partners in learning and collaboratively empower all students to become confident, resilient, self-directed and successful learners.
Wellbeing is the bedrock for all activities across all strategic improvement strategies, reflecting our core beliefs that success and acceptance breeds a culture where all stakeholders feel valued and cared for and prepared to take on challenge.
Lifelong learning, excellence, and happiness are the states of mind promoted in classrooms with the ever present question of 'How good can we be?' being asked across our community daily.
School Captains Report
During the school holidays, Ryde school leaders proudly represented our school at the City of Ryde Anzac Day commemoration service at Anzac Park in West Ryde. Many people came to commemorate the day that the ANZACs landed in Gallipoli.
The service involved school students, from many schools in the area, speaking in front of the Ryde community. Wreaths were laid in commemoration of the Australian soldiers who had died in past wars. Poems were recited and speeches were given by important figures in our community, such as Jerome Laxale and Jordan Lane.
All the Ryde school leaders attended, and together we laid down the wreath in the memory of the people who sacrificed their lives for the future of Australia.
This was an extremely heartfelt experience that should make us grateful for the sacrifices that those soldiers made for our country.

Attendance Matters!
We want to do all we can to be sure your child achieves their potential and enjoys being in school.
We know that school is the best place to learn. By attending school every day your child will get the most out of their learning and improve their career and life options.
When your child is absent it is important you let the school know, including the reason why, on the day or the day before. This helps make sure we know where our students are and offer support for you and your family if needed.
If you are having trouble getting your child to school every day or on time, please talk to our school staff so we can work together, because every day counts.
Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up and can negatively impact your child’s learning and wellbeing. When your child misses one day per fortnight, that's 4 weeks of missed learning in one year. Over an entire school journey this adds up to 1 year of lost learning.
COVID-19 is still circulating in the community. We can all minimise the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases by maintaining good hygiene practices at home and school.
Please contact the school if your child needs to miss school for any reason, so we can plan continued support for your child’s learning and wellbeing.
Expectations for digital communication
As a parent or carer, you are an important part of our school community. We know that you play a crucial role in helping your child become a motivated learner. Communication between our school and our community is critical for us to partner together.
To give our teachers the opportunity to recharge, spend time with their families and bring their best creative selves to work, we are setting clear expectations for when and how they respond to communication outside school operating hours. This means teachers may not reply to non-emergency messages or emails outside of school operating hours.
Please use the school’s email address for non-emergencies in the first instance. Our staff will respond to your queries within 2 school days under normal circumstances.
For longer discussions or complex matters, we ask parents and carers to make an appointment to speak to teachers directly, at a time that works best for everyone.
For emergencies, please contact 9809 3181. Emergencies include serious student health, safety and wellbeing issues.
Our staff will always stay in touch because open communication is what’s best for your child and their education. We don't want you to stop communicating with your teachers – we still want to hear from you if you have any questions or need to discuss a matter about your child. We know it’s often easier to send emails or messages after work. We will make sure we read and respond in school operating hours.
Our dedicated teachers want to help our students achieve their best – we’re on the same team.
Thank you for treating our staff with kindness and respect.
Kind Regards,
Thanh Ta

What we have to offer....
Technology
At Ryde PS we have a Hovercam in every classroom; many teachers nominate it as the most valuable item of technology to support student learning. Hovercams are specialised cameras which allow teachers to display any physical item on the classroom interactive whiteboard in real-time. These versatile devices also allow teachers to capture images and record videos for future reference. With a hovercam, every book becomes a big-book and student work samples can be quickly shared with the class to celebrate learning.
Visual Arts
The Visual Arts Group have been enjoying their time exploring a mix of abstract and landscape artworks. Students have spent time using acrylic paint, experimenting with colour mixing and techniques to accurately portray their ideas onto canvas.
K-2 Junior Choir
In junior Choir this term, we have continued practicing our first song and have found out about the Auslan signs which can accompany the vocals. Our choir members have enthusiastically begun to learn our second song, ‘This is me’, with some of our year 2 cohort devising appropriate actions which they are teaching to their friends.
3-6 Senior Choir
The senior choir have continued to learn and practise a range of songs, some including spanish lyrics. The students have started learning about how songs can be broken into separate parts; such as Alto and Soprano. Over the coming weeks senior choir members will be split into two groups to learn how to perform these different parts.

3-4 Junior Dance
The junior dance group are enjoying learning their new dance routine and are working hard getting ready for upcoming dance events. The dance students are demonstrating amazing, continued resilience and commitment. They are very excited to perform the routine. Congratulations to the junior dance group for making it into the North Sydney Dance Festival!
5-6 Senior Dance
Since the beginning of Term 2, the senior dance group has been captivating audiences with their unique dance themes at the Ryde Schools Performing Arts Festival. Each lesson brings new challenges, and our dance members are gaining confidence as they tackle these with determination. Our commitment to the 3Rs—Respect, Resilience, and Responsibility—guides us through every challenge.
We are immensely proud of their contributions and especially grateful to our dedicated choreographer, whose vision and hard work have shaped this performance into a spectacular piece. We eagerly anticipate their continued progress and development, knowing this piece will be a highlight of the 2024 Community inFocus. Stay tuned!
Student Representative Council (SRC)
The Student Representative Council (SRC) was very excited to announce our special Mother’s Day Stall, a tradition that allows us to express our gratitude and love for the incredible mothers and carers in our lives. held on the 8th of May. In our recent SRC meetings, we discussed the importance of this event in fostering a sense of community and celebrating the irreplaceable role of mothers and carers. We’ve also recognized the need to make this event inclusive, ensuring that everyone feels welcome to participate and find the perfect gift.
We worked efficiently to ensure this year’s stall was a memorable one. We planned an array of thoughtful gifts that were sure to bring a smile to every mother’s face, made inspiring posters and set up the tables, as well as selling the items. There was something for everyone’s budget with the prices ranging from $1 - 10 dollars. All proceeds from the Mother’s Day Stall will go towards the Year Six Farewell. This was a wonderful opportunity for us to come together as a community and support our graduating students. Our Mother’s Day Stall isn’t just about selling gifts; it’s about the values we share as a community. It’s about showing empathy, expressing gratitude, and acknowledging the endless love and support our mothers and carers provide us.
The mother’s day stall was very successful. At the start it seemed like the stock would last forever, but at the end, barely any products were left! Our mother’s day store is indirectly educational, especially for early stage students. This activity prompts students in our school to decide and purchase independently what present they think their mothers or carers would like. The mugs and bears were quickly sold out, as well as the bottles and jewellery. Many mugs were sold to younger students but they were also popular with the seniors of the school.
This activity also develops our SRC member’s spirit of teamwork. What our SRC members saw that was common, was that they all were proud of their presents that they would give to their beloved mothers.
Our SRC came together to make this Mother’s Day special. We wanted to show our mothers and carers how much they mean to us, not just through gifts, but through our actions and words, to make this Mother’s Day Stall a symbol of our appreciation and love for all the mothers and carers out there. Every gift purchased from our stall was a testament to the love and appreciation we have for our mothers. It’s a small gesture that says, “Thank you for everything you do.”
We hope your Mother’s Day was a memorable one, filled with love, gratitude, and lots of smiles. You are appreciated, today and every day.

Support for students who have English as an addition Language/Dialect (EALD)
At Ryde Public school, identified students receive additional support learning English. Students work in small groups to improve their vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students participate in guided reading, phonics, writing and vocabulary games. This week the EAL/D group read ‘The School Garden’ and then visited the new school vegetable garden and made connections through language experience activities. We are looking forward to celebrating Harmony Week in March.
Diverse Learners
The students in the Diverse Learning Space have settled well into Term 2. We have had such a positive start to the term and continued our life skills program with shopping and cooking. Some of the classes in the DLS participated in the zoo excursion where the students learnt about a variety of animals. The students also participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime where we read Bowerbird Blues and learnt that Bowerbirds like to collect different objects to help build their nests. All students have also been participating in the Footsteps Dance Program where we have integrated with other classes within the school to learn a new dance each week.
Early Stage 1
This week ES1 participated alongside the whole school in National Simultaneous Story time. The story that we read was Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker. The story was about a Bowerbird who is longing for connection and as the bowerbird went on a search for that connection, it sent him soaring across the sea. A fun fact that ES1 found out about Bowerbirds, is that they love to collect blue things. Kindergarten also followed Aura Parker’s step by step drawing video on how to draw a Bowerbird just like the ones she illustrated in her story.
Kindergarten students then completed fun activities with their class buddies. KG and KDY met their buddies on the oval and created videos of them pretending to swoop at a blue thing like a Bowerbird does. Their buddies then helped them write a sentence about what they were doing. KL and KJ met with their buddies in their classroom and they participated in a Bowerbird Blue artwork. The buddies helped them draw Bowerbirds and also helped them cut and glue blue items onto their artwork. ES1 had a great time participating in the National Simultaneous Story Time!
Stage 1
In Term 2, our Stage 1 students have settled in well and are having a blast! They're delving into the world of dance with Footsteps, discovering new styles each week. These sessions are not only fun but also educational, helping our children understand key dance elements such as time, space, dynamics, and relationships. It's a joy to see their enthusiasm for dance shine through in every class
Stage 2
At the conclusion of Term 1, Stage 2 students participated in a hands-on and interactive science incursion. The day commenced with a meet and greet with enthusiastic Rangers, followed by an interactive and engaging science presentation. The highlight of the day was a massive explosion using liquid nitrogen to launch over 1000 ping pong balls into the air! Throughout the activities, students questioned, planned, and conducted experiments. These experiments challenged them to describe how adding or removing heat causes changes of state, and to observe the characteristics and effects of common forms of heat energy.
Stage 3
Great Aussie Bush Camp
From the 10th to the 12th of April, Stage 3 went to The Great Aussie Bush Camp at Tea Gardens to enjoy a three day camp with challenging and adventurous activities every second of the day. We had lots of fun making unique memories, whether balancing on a rope high in the sky or laughing in our cabins, chatting to one another.
Every day, we had different activities planned for us. Some of the activities we experienced were pioneering, high ropes, orienteering and even fossiling. One of the most popular activities was the Dual Flying Fox, where a pair of students glided on a flying fox over a lake. The view up there was spectacular, from seeing birds in the air to kangaroos on the ground. Another activity that we enjoyed was archery. Testing out our skills with the bow and arrow and aiming for the target, as we found out, wasn’t as easy as it looked. However the most popular activity was probably the Giant Swing. Getting pulled up 15 metres by your class and swinging high up in the sky was a highlight of the trip.
Every day, we had six meals sandwiched between our activities. We were either always slurping on a snow cone or eating a sausage from a barbecue. There was always a variety of choices to choose from and always something different every day. From sandwiches to barbecues and snow cones to ice cream, we were always full of energy and ready for our activities. Ending a long day with a cup of chocolate milk and chocolate chip cookies, we were all ready to sink into our warm sleeping bags and get ready for the next day.
We all enjoyed going to camp and believed it was an amazing experience for everyone. We learnt new things everyday and loved spending time with our friends. We created new memories that will last a lifetime.
