Eligibility and selection

The Pulse Alive team are seeking talented dancers to be principal dancer at Pulse Alive 2023.

Nominations are open to students in Year 5 to Year 12 in 2023 who will be enrolled at a NSW public school.

Dancers selected via the audition process will be formed into various combinations for items throughout the show.

Please note, this category is only open to individual performers. Students selected as principal dancers will not be able to participate with their school group in massed dance or First Nations dance ensemble.

Successful students will require the endorsement of their school principal to participate. Students are encouraged to discuss their nomination with a teacher at their school prior to submission.

Students participating in this category will be supervised by members of the Pulse Alive team. Schools will not be expected to provide a teacher for duty of care of these students.

How to apply

Applications are now open for individual students to nominate to be a principal dancer in Pulse Alive 2023.

Initial auditions will be via video, which must be submitted with the nomination form.

Please complete the Pulse Alive 2023 - Principal dancer nomination form by Monday 19 September (Term 3 Week 10).

To audition, students are required to:

  • submit a video of themselves showcasing 2 different styles of dance.

  • Each style should be demonstrated for a minimum of 1 minute in length.

  • Students may choose to film a new video or may use a performance, audition or examination video of themselves from the past 12 months. No other students should be present in the submitted video.

  • Videos should either be uploaded to YouTube (as an unlisted link) or Vimeo with a password (please be sure to include the password to your video on your application form).

Students successful in the video round will be invited to a live audition at The Arts Unit, Lewisham on Sunday 9 October (school holidays) and from this audition the final team of principal vocalists will be selected.

  • Students informed of their progression to live auditions: Friday 23 September (Term 3 Week 10)

  • Live auditions at The Arts Unit, Lewisham: Sunday 9 October (school holidays)

  • Notification of audition results: Monday 17 October (Term 4 Week 2)

  • Principal dancer rehearsals - The Arts Unit: Friday 27 to Sunday 29 January 2023 (school holidays)

  • Principal dancer rehearsals - The Arts Unit: Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 March 2023 (Term 1 Week 6)

  • Principal dancer blocking rehearsal - Netball Central: Tuesday 7 March 2023 (Term 1 Week 7)

  • Dress rehearsal and sound check - Ken Rosewall Arena: Wednesday 8 March 2023 (Term 1 Week 7)

  • Performance days - Ken Rosewall Arena: Thursday 9 and Friday 10 March 2023 (Term 1 Week 7)

Principal dancers will also be allocated to participate in one of the massed dance items. This will involve 2 additional full-day rehearsals between Monday 20 February and Monday 6 March 2023 (Term 1 Week 5 to 7) at Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park.

Students will be advised of final dates on acceptance into the show.

Commitment

Students selected as principal dancers will be expected to be available for all of the above rehearsal and performance dates.

Costume

The costume for all items will include a coloured Pulse Alive t-shirt, included within your student resource fee.

Principal dancers will be asked to supply various options of their own dancewear to go with their Pulse Alive t-shirts.

Participation fee

There will be a resource fee of $48 per student (GST inclusive).

The resource fee assists with the costs involved in the conductors, choreographers and tutors working with the students, supports a number of music copyright costs and includes a Pulse Alive t-shirt, which will be worn by all performers as their costume during the event.

Principal dancers will be required to pay the resource fee through The Arts Unit student payment portal on acceptance into the show.
