Student Parliament Structure. Each House elects a captain who is the delgate to the student parliament.
Murwillumbah High School’s Student Parliament is structured to ensure every student has a voice, while also developing strong student leadership across the school.
At the centre of the structure is the Student Parliament Chairperson, who is elected by the Student Parliament itself. The Chairperson is responsible for leading meetings, ensuring discussions remain respectful and productive, and that minutes and resolutions are recorded properly.
Each House — Yellow, Red, Blak (Deadlies), Green, and Blue — elects a House Captain. These Captains form the core leadership group of the Parliament. They represent the interests, ideas, and concerns of their House members and help guide whole-school initiatives.
The structure operates in two key layers:
Standing Committees: These are the leadership positions held by the House Captains. They focus on ongoing priorities aligned to each House’s identity and values.
Working Committees: These are project-based groups made up of student representatives from each House. When an idea or issue is raised, students collaborate across Houses to plan, organise, and implement initiatives.
Importantly, the Inclusive Voice Committee ensures that all students — particularly those who may not traditionally seek leadership roles — have a pathway to contribute. Student voice is also strengthened through Student Assemblies and open forums, where ideas can be presented, debated, and refined before becoming formal resolutions.
In practical terms, this structure means:
Every House has representation.
Leadership is shared, not concentrated.
Students move from ideas → discussion → resolution → action.
There are clear processes for accountability and communication.
The overall goal of the Student Parliament is to give students authentic leadership experience while ensuring that school decisions and initiatives reflect the voices of the wider student body.
