Every brain has a built-in alarm system. Ours is a tiny part deep in the brain called the amygdala — at our school we call him Miggy. Miggy's job is to keep us safe, and for thousands of years that meant reacting fast to real danger.
The trouble is, Miggy can't always tell the difference between real danger and an everyday tricky moment — a hard maths question, a disagreement with a friend, speaking in front of the class. When that happens, Miggy can take over and make a normal moment feel like an emergency.
Managing Miggy teaches kids 7 simple, repeatable steps to notice when Miggy is taking the wheel — and gently take it back. It's not about getting rid of feelings. It's about helping kids recognise big feelings early and know what to do next.
This page is here so families can watch the lesson videos and songs at home, alongside what's being taught in class.
"Students have been looking forward to TAP each week! The character and actions of 'Miggy' have become part of everyday conversation in the classroom and a way for students to reflect and react to difficulties with their emotions!"
"Students demonstrate the ability to identify and label their emotions and independently apply self-regulation strategies before seeking teacher assistance."
"My son and I have been working watching these videos ever since he came from school singing about Miggy and excitedly pointing out the skills he learned to use when “Miggy takes over”. he even reminds me on occasion not to let Miggy take over and to take deep belly breaths and to trace my hand when I find myself in moments where I fail to notice my own dysregulation."
"This program has been instrumental in helping my son understand the role of the amygdala and how to combat those difficult moments.
Highly recommend this program to other parents!"
