IQ2: How is information about the reactivity and structure of organic compounds obtained?
Students:
● investigate the processes used to analyse the structure of simple organic compounds addressed in the course, including but not limited to:
– infrared spectroscopy
This is an overview of the main features of IR Spectroscopy
This is a video by the Royal Society of Chemistry showing IR Spectroscopy in action (and much more detail)
This is a selection of sample spectra provided by the DoE.
USYD has some fantastic explanations of Infrared Spectroscopy with annotated spectra as examples.
Doc Brown is a British Chemistry Resource (GCSE). There is a wide range of C-13 Spectra explained here.
ChemSpider is an online database which allows you to search for molecules AND their spectra.
You can search by name or structure.
The Spectral Database for Organic Compounds is an excellent database allowing you to search compounds based on multiple factors and examine spectra.
By using the "Browse Spectra" function, you can draw many molecules and examine their IR, C-NMR or H-NMR spectra.
This is older and slower.
