In Big Picture each term you have to create a project and exhibit that project at the end of each term, we have around 8 weeks to complete a project that fits our interests but also includes the Big Picture learning goals which is how we determine how rigorous our learning is within the project, Some projects can go over a term but we have to check in and present our progress at the end of those 8 weeks.
2023
2023 was my first year at big picture and although I have a bunch of good memories from this year I also feel like I could have worked a lot harder and learnt a lot more. In the first term of 2023 we had our first exhibition where we showed our work on our main project which was the "Who Am I?", the "Who Am I?" is a project where we talk about our daily lives, Interests and goals for the future, me and Arden also made a gym brand in that term called Fractured fitness that was going to be a gym and clothing brand but It didn't really go anywhere. I also made a video on a trip where i went to heron island and recorded all the animals that were there.
In term 2 we had our first chance to create our own project based on our current interests which for me was fitness, so for my project I looked up the tren twins workout routine and copied it to see if it was good or not, while this was a good first project I still think I could have added way more to it, for some reason I cant find this project anywhere so I have no photos or buttons to show what I have done.
Term 3 was when I started to slowly get the hang of projects and started to challenge myself way more, the project I choose was based on what I could do while I was at my mums, as I was staying there for 1 week and then traveling to Sydney to see my Auntie for another week, so I decided to rank gyms based on if rural or city gyms are better and the results that I found was overall city gyms were the best but the best gym that i went to was the rural one. I also did a side project where I biked and ran everyday and tracked my progress as I wanted to loose weight after.
Term 4 was one the terms that I worked the hardest in and was definitely the best project out of this term. In term 4 my main project was to create a sustainable piece of clothing and to create a streetwear clothing brand, so I researched materials, cost and designs, I learnt how to create graphics and hoodies and bought a mock-up pack for my final designs i was also watching videos on how to design cloths and sell them to the correct audience and how to market my clothes. It was all super good and I was proud of my work, but after this term I kind of just lost interests randomly and stopped pursuing clothing creation.
2024
For the first term in 2024 I did a project based on being the healthiest version of myself and what that takes to do, when first starting this project I went to multiple sites and calculators to find my maintenance calories, after I found that i took some away from it so i would be in a calorie deficit. Now that the calorie deficit was done i started to look into cardio and what the best forms of cardio were, I found that while some unrealistic forms of cardio like running up stair at a fast pace for 30 minutes were the best but the most realistic one was just running so i started running 3 times a week and tracking it. After that I looked into sleep and how it helps with muscle growth and energy. I also helped one of my friends Finlay by making him a fitness program. This was definitely one of my favourite projects and I hope I can create a good fitness project again soon.
In term 2 I was back into fitness again but this time with a different approach, I was tracking my calories and strength but while maintaining instead of cutting which means i can start to gain way more strength as my body isn't deprived of its essential energy. So what I did was record my strength before and after and then I would calculate the strength increase on each exercise. This term my main focus was just hitting my protein and I didn't really care that much about macronutrients in terms of carbs and fats, I still cared a bit about sugar but that's about it. I also did a project on money where I found out the key terms and all the trading platforms, I also looked into what a stock was and how people use stocks to make money and interviewed two people on how they started trading and why they did it.
For term 3 I lost interest in the money project so I stopped looking into money and stocks so instead I looked into heartrate and cardiovascular health and in doing that Nick recommended me to create an experiment with the class and track every bodies heart rate so i can gauge the importance of heartrate more, so the experiment i chose was set out like this:
Participants take resting heart rate after 5 deep breathes in a seated position
Participants do star jumps for 1 minutes
Participants take their heart rate directly after for 15 seconds multiplying their answer by 4
The timer starts for 2 minutes
Participants take heart rate after 2 minutes for 15 seconds multiplying their answer by 4
I also interviewed one of my dad's friend who is a personal trainer, so I asked him a bunch of questions and got to know him, he was a good bloke and good to chat with. I also tracked my progress in the gym and swapped my split into PPLx Arnold which I really liked.
I then also did a side project with the place I am doing my Internship at called the Australian Sea Bird and Turtles Rescue were I tracked a turtles rehabilitation journey from start to release.
