The IN_SYD Mathematics Faculty's goal is to allow students to have the largest range of post-secondary options available for as long as possible.
The Stage 5 pathways are designed to achieve this as the topics will be covered to different depths.
Students in this pathway will progress rapidly through the Core topics so that they will have time to more fully cover as many Path topics as possible, including some additional topics such as Polynomials, Functions and Logarithms. This means they will be well prepared for Year 11 Advanced and Extension 1. Motivated students who are capable of succeeding in this pathway will be placed in this class.
This pathway is suited for students who consistently achieved excellent results in Mathematics and possess a strong work ethic.
The majority of IN_SYD students are suited, and will be automatically placed on this pathway. Students will cover every Core topic and a variety of Path topics for Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Advanced. This course is designed to be equivalent to the level of the Australian Curriculum attained by students outside of NSW. Students who excel on this pathway will be prepared for Year 11 Advanced, and the door to the many STEM related post-school opportunities remain open.
In cases in which a student may not be suited to the AAA Pathway, IN_SYD provides an alternative called the ‘Numerate Citizen Pathway’. This pathway:
Provides extensive revision and consolidation of prior learning from previous years.
Covers the Core topics and as many of the Path topics for Mathematics Standard as possible.
Focuses on aspects of numeracy which are most relevant to real-life beyond school.
By the end of Year 10, our students on the Numerate Citizen Pathway will be ready for:
University degrees and TAFE courses with minimal mathematical requirements.
Year 11 Mathematics Standard or Year 11 Numeracy.
Numeracy tests required to gain access to industry pathways such as plumbing, hospitality, public service (e.g. policing and firefighting), carpentry and electrical.
Engaging in applications of mathematics and numeracy in their everyday future life.
Parents of IN_SYD students who are best suited for this pathway will receive an email from the school.
The diagram below is helpful to understand how the three different pathways will cover the content in Years 9 and 10. It focuses on the topic of Trigonometry as example. Trigonometry is covered over four topics in Stage 5:
Trigonometry A - core topic
Trigonometry B - core topic
Trigonometry C - path topic for Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Advanced
Trigonometry D - path topic for Mathematics Advanced
The diagram shows the degree to which various Trigonometry topics will be covered in Year 9 (see the green ticks) across all three pathways. This is reviewed and further learning occurs in Year 10 (see the blue ticks). The diagram shows that:
students in the Express Pathway will endeavour to complete the two Core topics, as well as the two Path topics by the end of Year 10.
students in the Access All Areas Pathway will endeavour to complete the two Core topics, as well as one of the Path topics by the end of Year 10.
students in the Numerate Citizen Pathway will endeavour to complete the two Core topics, as well as some of the Path topic for Standard by the end of Year 10.
Note: this is to help parents and students understand about the progression of learning in the three pathways and is not necessarily an indicator of what will be taught in Trigonometry in each of the pathways.
