Mathematics Standard

Course Description


This course is a Board Developed Course which represents 2 units for Year 11. In the Year 12 year students may choose from the Board Developed Mathematics Standard 2 course or the Content Endorsed

The Year 11 Mathematics Standard course, the Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2 course and the Year 12 Mathematics Standard 1 course are designed to promote the development of knowledge, skills and understanding in areas of mathematics that have direct application to the broad range of human activity, including a range of post-school pathways requiring a variety of mathematical and statistical techniques.

Students will learn to use a range of techniques and tools, including relevant technologies, in order to develop solutions to a wide variety of problems relating to their present and future needs and aspirations.

Prerequisites & Exclusions

The course is constructed on the assumption that students have achieved the 5.1 outcomes in the core of the Mathematics course for Stage 5, along with the recommended options: Trigonometry & Further Algebra.

Students may not study any other Stage 6 Mathematics course in conjunction with Mathematics Standard.


Assessment

Internal assessment will consist of a variety of assessment tasks across all of the content of the course during the Year 11 and both Year 12 courses.

Calculators, including Board approved graphics calculators, may be used.

Geometrical instruments and approved geometrical templates may be used.

Mathematics Standard 2 (Year 12)

O 2 Units (Board developed course, Category A)

O In Year 12 students can elect to study either the Mathematics Standard 1 Year 12 course (Category B) or the Mathematics Standard 2 Year 12 course (CategoryA)

O Students studying the Mathematics Standard 1 course may elect to undertake an optional HSC examination.

O Provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of and competence in further aspects of mathematics for a range of concurrent HSC studies, such as in the life sciences, the humanities and business studies.


Prerequisites

O Recommended students study at least some of the Stage 5.2 content of the Mathematics Years 7–10 Syllabus, particularly the Patterns and Algebra topics and Trigonometry, if not all of the content.


Exclusions

O Students may not study any other Stage 6 mathematics Year 11 course in conjunction with the Mathematics Standard Year 11 course, or any other Stage 6 mathematics Year 12 course in conjunction with the Mathematics Standard 1 Year 12 course.

O The Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2 course content is written in the same five Strands.

Assessment

Once the assessment of the Year 12 course has commenced, some Year 11 course work can be included in assessment tasks for Mathematics Standard. No more than 30% of the assessment is to be based on the Year 11 course.

External assessment will consist of a single Year 12 examination of two and a half hours duration.

Calculators, including Board approved graphics calculators, may be used.

Geometrical instruments and approved geometrical templates may be used.

Mathematics Standard 1 (Year 12)

O Provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of and competence in further aspects of mathematics for concurrent HSC studies, such as in vocational education and training courses, other practically oriented courses, and some humanities courses. It also provides an appropriate mathematical background for students entering the workforce and/or undertaking further training.

O In Year 12 students can elect to study either the Mathematics Standard 1 Year 12 course (Category B) or the Mathematics Standard 2 Year 12 course (CategoryA)

O Students studying the Mathematics Standard 1 course may elect to undertake an optional HSC examination.

O To be eligible for an ATAR, students studying the Mathematics Standard 1 course must undertake a pattern of study to satisfy the ATAR requirements and complete the optional HSC examination. For the purposes of calculating the ATAR, no more than 2 units from Category B courses can be included.


Prerequisites

O Students have studied the content and achieved the outcomes of the Mathematics Years 7–10 Syllabus up to, and including, the content and outcomes of Stage 5.1.


Exclusions

O Students may not study any other Stage 6 mathematics Year 11 course in conjunction with the Mathematics Standard Year 11 course, or any other Stage 6 mathematics Year 12 course in conjunction with the Mathematics Standard 1 Year 12 course.
