Mathematics Extension 2

Course Description

This course is a Board Developed Course which represents 1 unit for the Year 12 year.

The course offers a suitable preparation for study of mathematics at tertiary level, as well as a deeper and more extensive treatment of certain topics than is offered in other mathematics courses. It represents a distinctly high level in school mathematics involving the development of considerable manipulative skill and a high degree of understanding of the fundamental ideas of algebra and calculus. These topics are treated in some depth.

In particular, this course requires a high level of commitment from students and will involve substantial independent study to achieve course outcomes.

Main Topics

Year 12 course

· Intro Complex Numbers

· The Nature of Proof

· 3D Vectors

· Applying Complex Numbers

· Further Integration

· Further Proof by Mathematical Induction

· Applications of Calculus to Mechanics

Prerequisites & Exclusions

The course is designed for students with a special interest in mathematics who have shown that they possess special aptitude for the subject.

Students must study the Mathematics Advanced and Mathematics Extension 1 courses concurrently and may not study Mathematics Standard in conjunction with the Mathematics Extension 2 course.

Assessment

The objectives of the course are grouped into two components,

· Concepts, skills and techniques to solve mathematical problems in a wide range of theoretical and practical contexts, and

· Reasoning and communication in appropriate forms to construct mathematical arguments and proofs and to interpret and use mathematical models

A number of tasks will be used to determine a student’s school-based assessment and any one task may contribute to measuring attainment of both components.

External assessment consists of two written examination papers. One paper is identical to the paper of two hours duration for the Mathematics Extension 1 course. The other paper is based on the Mathematics Extension 2 course and is of three hours duration.

Board-approved calculators, geometrical instruments and approved geometrical templates may be used.
