How are floods managed at Longneck Lagoon?
Managing flooding events has always been a reality for Longneck Lagoon Environmental Education Centre. With the predicted effects of climate change, flooding events will become more frequent and more severe, which means it is crucial that the centre implements effective strategies to minimise the impact of flooding.
Managing flooding at Longneck Lagoon involves several considerations. These include:
an understanding of local topography, rainfall patterns, and historical flood data
the safety and well-being of students and staff
the impact of flooding events on teaching and learning
the impact of flooding events on the environment
the cost of maintaining and/or re-building infrastructure
While the staff at Longneck Lagoon have become highly effective at managing floods, the procedures adopted by the centre are frequently reviewed to ensure any improvements are made when needed.
