Human-Environment Interactions
Flooding at Longneck Lagoon (within the Hawkesbury-Nepean floodplain)
Flooding at Longneck Lagoon (within the Hawkesbury-Nepean floodplain)
Welcome
This resource has been designed to support the NSW Geography 11–12 Syllabus topic Human-environment interactions. Students investigate the 2021-2022 Hawkesbury-Nepean floods. They will explore the physical processes and cycles influencing the nature and occurrence of floods; challenges, opportunities, responses and management of floods. Students will undertake fieldwork at Longneck Lagoon Environmental Education Centre where they will explore first hand the impacts of floods and management strategies.
Welcome
Step 1 - Download and print the fieldwork booklet.
Step 2 - Complete the pre-work activities on the pre/post-work pages on this website.
Step 3 - After your excursion, finish any incomplete pages from your fieldwork booklet using the pre/post-work pages on this website.
Geographical questions for investigation
What are the physical processes and cycles related to flooding in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley?
What are the challenges, opportunities and responses to flooding at Longneck Lagoon?
How effective has management of flooding been at Longneck Lagoon?
Outcomes
A student:
examines places, environments and natural and human phenomena, for their characteristics, spatial patterns, interactions and changes over time GE-11-01
explains geographical opportunities and challenges, and varying perspectives and responses GE-11-03
assesses responses and management strategies, at a range of scales, for sustainability GE-11-04
analyses and synthesises relevant geographical information from a variety of sources GE-11-05
applies geographical inquiry skills and tools, including spatial technologies, fieldwork, and ethical practices, to investigate places and environments GE-11-07
Learning tasks
Students will:
Use topographic and relief maps to study the area
Test soil and topography parameters to identify how they contribute to flooding events at Longneck Lagoon
Conduct a field sketch to demonstrate the extent of flooding events
