Premiers Reading Challenge
The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) was established in 2001 to encourage students to read, read more, and read more widely. Now in its 25th year, the NSW PRC is the largest reading challenge in Australia. This year, K-2 students will complete the challenge during class time with their teachers reading to them 30 books from the PRC booklist. All K-2 students will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the challenge. Students in 3-6 will also be assisted to complete the challenge, however they will need to show an increased level of independence by logging their books themselves and selecting their own PRC books.
The library has a small number of laptops students may use at lunchtime on Tuesday and Wednesday to log their PRC books. We also have two wonderful parent helpers who pull out some PRC books from our shelves and have them readily accessible for students to borrow. PRC books are also available to borrow from Engadine Library, as well as other Sutherland Shire libraries. I highly recommend becoming a Sutherland Shire library member as their extensive collection of PRC books, including e-Books and online reading platforms can be accessed for free. Booklists for the challenge can be found on the PRC website, and to log on, students will use their Department of Education email and password. Students in Stage 2 and 3 should be familiar with their DoE username and password, however if you or your child require a reminder of this, please speak to myself or their class teacher.
Another exciting change to the PRC in 2026 is the option for parents and teachers to exercise discretion about how the 3-6 students access the booklists. If your child in 3-6 requires assistance in reading the books, listening to the stories read to them count as ‘books read’ and may be logged online. Families of 3-6 students, please have a look at the online booklists and the selection of PRC books at the YPS and local community libraries to match PRC books to our child’s reading ability. We hope this change brings further enjoyment of books and inclusivity of all abilities.
The challenge opened on Monday 23 February 2026 and closes to students on Friday 18 September 2026. Students in 3-6 are only required to read 10 PRC books and 10 personal choice books. K-2 students will have 30 PRC books read to them by their class teacher. For more information on the PRC please speak to Mrs Last or see the website https://online.education.nsw.gov.au/prc/home.html (NSW Premier's Reading Challenge 2026 : Home).
On Wednesday 1 April 2026 students will be participating in a day of fitness activities as a school fundraiser. Money that is raised will be used to help fund much needed resources for the school. This is a major fundraiser for Yarrawarrah PS and is run by staff, so your generosity and support are greatly appreciated. A note was emailed to all families in Week 3, but if you require another, please contact Mrs Last. Students also received a donation recording form in Week 3, which can also be copied again if needed.
There will be prizes for:

We are thankful for the support from all of our wonderful YPS families and look forward to this exciting challenge day on 1 April. Supporting our school through fundraising efforts is a team effort and greatly appreciated by all.
On Sunday 1st March 2026, communities across the country came together to take part in Clean Up Australia Day, an initiative led by Clean Up Australia. This annual event encourages Australians to help care for our environment by removing litter from local parks, beaches, streets and community spaces. It’s a wonderful opportunity to promote environmental awareness, sustainability and community pride.
As part of this important national initiative, our school proudly participated in Clean Up Schools Day on Friday 27th February. Students worked enthusiastically to collect rubbish from around our school grounds, demonstrating teamwork, responsibility and respect for our environment.
We are incredibly proud of the positive attitude and community spirit shown by our students. Their efforts not only helped keep our school looking its best, but also reinforced the importance of looking after the world around us.
Thank you to all of our students and staff for their fantastic participation and commitment to making a difference!
