Rocks are made up of minerals. They are classified into three main groups according to how they were formed:

Most of the rock in the Royal National Park (and throughout Sydney) is sedimentary rock.
The main type of sedimentary rock you will see when visiting the Royal National Park is called Hawkesbury Sandstone. If you're from Sydney, your home and school are probably built on Hawkesbury Sandstone. It formed approximately 200 million years ago - when dinosaurs were roaming the Earth!
Other sedimentary rocks you might see while in the Royal National Park are shale and conglomerate.
