Pyramids of Giza
Pyramids of Giza
~ Abigail Vania Supranata
The three Pyramids of Giza are located in the plateau of Giza near the modern city, Cairo. The Egyptians chose to build the pyramids there as the plateau could bear the heavy weight of the pyramids.
Process of Building the Pyramids of Giza:
The pyramids were built between 2550-2490 BC. It is estimated that it took around 15-30 years to build.
Process:
1) Find a good location and a good team of strong, commited Egyptian workers.
2) The Egyptians had to prepare the site and build a strong foundation or base. In order to do this, they had to remove the loose sand and make a flat base.
3) Carve the huge stones with copper chisels (the pyramids were built with limestone, granite, basalt and mortar).
4) After carving the stones, the Egyptians had to raise the blocks and place them, making a pyramid. They used tree trunks and logs, arranging them to make a track. They would roll the heavy objects on top of them and slide them along the logs making the job easier.
Bricks and Equipment
The Pyramids of Giza were made of bricks of many sizes. They were made of limestone, granite, basalt and mortar. The King's chamber was made of large granite bricks instead of limestone. The Ancient Egyptians used two simple machines including the inclined plane (ramp) and lever.
The Three Pyramids:
Khufu = Oldest of the three Pyramids.
Khafre = The Sphinx statue included in the pyramid.
Menkaure = Smaller than the other two pyramids.
