Sarpang Central School was initially started as a private school sometime in the late 1950s on the bank of Sarpang Khola (river) near the previous Sarpang Market, under Shompangkha Geog. The school started with two teachers where a medium of instruction was Nepali then. In 1962, the government took over the school and started with Dzongkha and English as a medium of instruction. Since the school was then located in a flood prone area, it was relocated at Sarpang Tar, that is, right in front of the Royal Bhutan Police Station. Mr. B. S. Sharma, an Indian citizen, was the first Headmaster of the school.
In 1990, the school was closed due to the southern security reasons. The school was then occupied by the Royal Bhutan Army (RBA). However, a part of the school was maintained as a primary school by the government. The arm force continued to occupy the school until Nanglam High School was shifted to Sarpang Tar in 2001. In the same year the school was upgraded to Middle Secondary School.
In 2008, the school was upgraded to Higher Secondary School and in 2016 the School was upgraded to Central School.
Today, the school offers general courses from class seven to twelve headed by a very experienced Principal, Mr. Thinley Dorji along with V.Ps Lop. Karma Jigme. They are supported by competent teaching staff and non-teaching staff. Having been equipped with sufficient computers and other ICT facilities, the staff and students are working towards producing informed, productive and dedicated future citizens in fulfilling the 4th King’s noble vision of “Gross National Happiness”.
