Brief Background on the Institute:
Changangkha Middle Secondary School was first established in 1961 as Thimphu Primary School. It was renamed to Changangkha Primary School in 1973 under the leadership of Mrs. Namchu. The school was upgraded to Lower Secondary School in 1996 when Mrs. Kunzang Choden was heading the school. The school has had numerous Headmasters and Headmistresses who helped mould and shape students and produced some of the best alumni in the country. In 2012 the school further got upgraded to middle secondary school under the leadership of Mr. Jigme Dorji. The first batch of class X graduated in 2013 with 36% of students qualifying for government schools under the leadership of Mr. Sonam Phuntsho.
At present the school is led by Mr. Nyendo who joined the school with effect from 19th February 2014. In 2016 the school received awards for the significant improvement in classes III and X board exams. In 2017 the school created a history by receiving an award for the best top 10 schools of Bhutan securing 5th position with the qualifying percentage of 75.3%. The qualifying percentage of class X has been on a progressive improvement every year ever since the present principal took over the principal-ship.
The SEN unit was formally inaugurated by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Tshering Pem Wangchuck in 2002. The Ministry of Education started the SEN programme as a project funded by a private donor through Bhutan Foundation. Then Changangkha became one of the pilot schools to cater to differently abled students in the country. The school not only offers special classes tailored for students with special needs but also ensures their inclusion in mainstream classroom activities. Over time, it has grown into a vibrant learning hub for all learners. Ramps have been built around the school to enable easy access to the playground, toilets, and classrooms to our students with special needs. The dedicated teachers provide inclusion of these students in the teaching learning processes in the mainstream classes along with additional lessons during pull-out classes. Apart from the academic studies, a series of co-curricular activities are carried out as well.
