Our exploration question for this project is:
How can we collect & share the stories of the people in our communities?
We will be showcasing our learning from this project as part of our Christmas Fair this year so please come along and visit!
Please scroll down to see what we have been up to during this project so far!

We have spent time creating lots of interview questions using various resources to explore how to find out more about other people.
This week we have been learning about how to ask the best questions possible so that we can capture the stories of the people we'll be interviewing. We have looked at:
Open and closed questions
Question formats
How to use multiple choice questions
Questioning timelines

As part of our focus on Metaskills, we have been exploring how to communicate effectively. Students practiced using their interview questions on each other in class and reflected on the different elements of communication. A key point that was identified was that we should listen to understand as much as we speak as these are both key features of communication.

As part of our interview preparation, we have had visiting journalists to work with us this week. Thanks go to Stewart Cooper from East Lothian's communications team and Erin Brown from the East Lothian Courier for coming in to share their wisdom with our classes.
They shared lots of information around engaging our interview subjects, delving deeper by asking follow up questions and being curious about the stories that people share. They also demonstrated their interview skill with student volunteers before getting learners to grill them with their interview questions!

The students shared at the start of the project that capturing a person's story would have more impact if they had a photo to go with the information. To support this, we had a professional photographer come in to classes to share tips and tricks around how to take a high quality portrait photograph. They investigated lighting, angles and positioning the person to frame them effectively. Students were using digital cameras from our art department and also using their phones to explore using the camera we have in our pocket!

The students are now ready to put their new skills and knowledge into action by interviewing actual people! Classes went out and about in Prestonpans to conduct live interviews on the streets of our town. This allowed them to practice their interview skills and meet a wide variety of people. In addition to this, we involved our whole school community by inviting anyone with links to PL to come into classes and be interviewed as part of this project. The students had a ball interviewing everyone and we are very grateful to those who stopped to chat or popped into the school!

Our students are now considering how they will share the stories of the people that they interviewed. They are choosing one of their interviewees and planning what their display will look like for the Christmas fair. We had a fantastic visit from two students from Queen Margaret University who are studying Film and Media, to share with the classes a project that they have worked on and share some ideas about how to use your interview information in the best way to suit the person and the audience.

After so much work and effort from the students, we we able to showcase an excellent selection of work including person centred displays and biographies so that our community could find out about all of the fantastic people!
Our students created visual displays with portrait photographs of their chosen person. This ranged from mindmap visuals to rapping and stop motion videos to bring their person to life for their audience!
You can see their work below, they should be so proud of themselves!
