MUSSELBURGH GRAMMAR SCHOOL
THE GRAMMARIAN
THE GRAMMARIAN
We welcomed our P7s to the Grammar today for the first of their three transition days, and it was wonderful to see and hear their enthusiasm! It was also a pleasure to see all 73 students who volunteered to be their buddies taking such good care of them.
I’m sure that today’s experience has settled any new S1 nerves and we look forward to seeing them all again on Monday.
It was lovely to see all year groups enjoying last night’s Summer Dance. Thanks to Ms Emslie and Mr Lynn for organising the event, to Mr Devine and Mrs McKechnie for manning the tuckshop, Mrs Walker for the photo booth (photos further on) Mrs Donnelly, Ms Fraser and Ms Doody for supervising, and Mr Plenderleith for compering the Hawaiian ceilidh.
We move into the last two weeks of term on Monday- time really is flying by.
However you are spending the weekend, (I hear there is a football game on somewhere?), enjoy!

We want to support the wellbeing of all our young people and ensure that their focus is upon learning. As all our pupils now have their own Chromebooks, mobile phones are no longer needed for learning in school so all our classrooms are now phone free learning environments.
All pupils are expected to keep their phone switched off in their school bag, or to place it into a box/ fabric pouch in the classroom if they don’t have a bag.
READY TO LEAD
The applications for our prefect and Head Team are now live!
Ms Uttley, DHT, posted the application forms on the year group classrooms this week and the closing date for both is Wednesday 10 June.
Prefect positions are open to all S4-S6 students, and S6 for Head Team applications. These are excellent opportunities to develop leaderships skills, confidence and team work.

MUSICAL SUCCESS
It has been a busy few weeks for some of our musicians. On Wednesday May 27th, Amy Forshaw, Zoa Strachan, Noah McBirnie, Emma Leathard, Evie Martin, Joshua Waiting, Eva Scott and Zachariah Ng performed a short afternoon concert to residents at Harbour House Care Home.
Last week, Daniel Barrett, Evie Martin and Emma Leathard sat Trinity Music examinations at the German Church in Edinburgh. All three students achieved a distinction award - a brilliant achievement - with Daniel Barrett achieving an outstanding 94 out of 100 in his Grade 7 Saxophone exam. Dan has been awarded a place at the Junior Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for next session and will be joining Tess Devlin there in September.
P7 woodwind and brass players from Campie and Stoneyhill primaries have been joining MGS Wind Band on Wednesday afternoons throughout the term, culminating in a performance at North Esk Church as part of East Lothian Instrumental Music Service’s concerts in aid of MacMillan Cancer Care. These concerts took place across two nights, Tuesday 9th at North Esk Church and Thursday 11th at Prestonkirk, East Linton, and featured our Wind and Jazz Bands, clarinet and saxophone trios, saxophone, guitar and piano solos from MGS musicians.
Many of our musicians are involved in external orchestra courses. Tess Devlin is currently taking part in the West of Scotland Schools’ Symphony Orchestra course and also played in the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland’s Development Orchestra course this April. Dan Barrett will be playing with the National Youth Wind Ensemble of Scotland this July and Julia Scott will join Tess Devlin on the Edinburgh Youth Orchestra course, culminating in performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Noah McBirnie will also be playing in the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland’s Academy Course.
Congratulations and good luck to all our S6 musicians. Hannah Scott, Milo Egan, Isaac Mwanza, Sophie Davidson and Sophie Hill are all continuing with their music or sound production studies next year and we wish them all the best!
Juliet Aspley (Instrumental Music Instructor).

SILVER DUKE OF EDINBURGH PRACTICE EXPEDITION
It was the turn of our Silver Duke of Edinburgh participants to take on their practice expedition this week. Starting at Flotterstone in the Pentlands, the groups had a challenging first day climbing to the peak of Allurmuir Hill! They were rewarded with amazing views across the Lothians and Fife and the sun stayed out all day. The groups made camp at Bonaly Scout Centre with evening entertainment including a game of rounders. The following day was a circular route of over 20km passing Threipmuir, Loganlea and Glencourse reservoirs. The weather was a typically Scottish mixture of sunshine and showers - perfect for the midges! This did not dampen spirits and everyone persevered and were still smiling by the time we got back to camp. We also celebrated Lois’s 16th birthday with cake and smores! On the final day participants navigated their way to Hillend displaying great teamwork and determination. Everyone's map skills have shown great improvement over the three days and there will now be a chance to reflect on what equipment they had, or didn’t have, with them and what they will pack next time! Blister plasters probably top of the list! The Silver group will now prepare for their assessed expedition in September which will be in the Borders. Well done everyone!
SUMMER DANCE 2026
Weekly Attendance
As a reminder, school absenteeism remains a significant challenge across Scotland. In 2023/24, 31.4% of pupils were persistently absent, missing 10% or more of the school year. While this has since improved, with a 2.9 percentage point decrease to 28.5%, absenteeism continues to impact learning, wellbeing, and attainment.
ART & DESIGN VISIT TO EDINBURGH COLLEGE OF ART
Thursday’s classroom for our Higher/Advanced Higher Art & Design learners looked a bit different with our learners travelling into Edinburgh to view the 2026 Degree Show Exhibition held in Edinburgh College of Art.
This was a great opportunity for our learners to view art and design work from a wide range of disciplines to help inform their personal choices for their Art & Design folios this year. We left inspired and with lots of ways forward for how we could tackle work this year. Well done to all on the trip for their positivity and openness to new ideas!
PE DEPT
We would like to remind all pupils that they should bring a full change of kit for PE to allow them to take part to the best of their abilities and to maintain high standards of personal hygiene.
Crocs(even in sport mode) and Uggs are not suitable and are dangerous when taking part in PE. The most appropriate and suitable footwear are trainers.
Another reminder that phones are not to be used in changing rooms for taking pictures/selfies/tik toks etc.
THE HONEST THREAD
Our Honest Thread, “free to a good home” initiative is a new way to share gently used school uniforms within our school community. Anyone who is in need of these items are welcome to request them free of charge.
If you would like to receive any uniform items, please complete the short Google Form below. This allows us to organise requests and prepare your order for collection from the School Office.
https://forms.gle/8NGk3eGnr5M9bMd56
The form will be added to on a regular basis and we hope that we will be able to include items other than schoolwear; this scheme is entirely donation based, so families are always invited to donate clean, good-quality items they no longer need. All donations are much appreciated and can be dropped off at the School Office.
SCHOOL TOILETS
Our pupil toilets are checked on a regular basis to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety. These checks may be done by male or female staff members, and signage is in toilets to make pupils aware of this.

Reminder that all absences should be reported before 8am by texting 07860 049075. We have noticed that there are a few parents leaving pupil absence messages on out staff absence line. This line is not always manned after 8am therefore pupil absences will not be pick up in time. Please help us cut down on staff time and costs by notifying us before we have to contact you.
Please also remember to let us know in advance of any healthcare appointments for your young person, to save time at the point they need to leave school. If we haven’t been notified in advance, we will need to call you to verify, which may delay their departure from school.
