Creative thinking, critical thinking and problem solving currently top the list of skills employers believe will grow in prominence in the workplace in the next five years. This course aims to develop these skills which will help students succeed in a rapidly changing and competitive employment environment. This course is like no other in the Scottish curriculum and due to the success of introducing the course to S4-6 we saw the value of introducing this throughout the year to S2 students too.
The S2 course is a fun and engaging introduction to the Creative Thinking course. We cover a wide range of projects including designing an alarm clock for an animated character, creating an exhibit for a museum on Mars based on a topic of their choice from Earth, solving problems such as lacklustre waiting rooms in hospitals, and generally letting their imagination run wild!
On completion of this course students have the opportunity to achieve a level SCQF 1-3 Creative Thinking qualification through Edinburgh College.
The students will complete the Creative Bravery playlist which includes three main projects (outlined below) as well as a number of warm up projects:
Unit 1: Circular Brand: Created by the Dame Ellen MacArthur Foundation, this project asks students to design their own circular fashion brand that raises awareness of circular economies to young people through bold designs. The students' final design will be produced on a t-shirt through the Teemill website.
Unit 2: Van of Dreams: Napier University worked alongside Daydream Believers to create a project which challenges student to redesign a vehicle which suits the needs of a specific community. Students will then build their concept using a variety of materials.
Unit 3: Campaign for Kindness: This project follows the values of StudioLR a creative design company based in Edinburgh that believe that creativity paired with empathy and kindness can make a difference in today's society. Through StudioLR's lesson students will create a visual campaign to promote kindness towards a particular group in society.
The majority of students will complete this course at SCQF level 5. The projects are internally assessed by the teachers delivering the course and moderated by colleagues from Edinburgh College. As this course is not delivered through the SQA there is no final exam, instead the students are continuously assessed throughout the year based on how they perform in each project. The main skills that will be assessed include researching, conceptualising, failing and fixing, communicating, and evaluating. On successful completion of this course students will receive the equivalent of a National 5 qualification and a certificate from Edinburgh College.
