SPIRITS ATHLETICS
ABOUT SPIRITS ATHLETICS
Sturgeon Composite High School's history dates back to 1977. During our 55 years of operation we have competed in both 3A and 4A classifications under the Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA). We have also been lucky enough to compete in both North Central and Edmonton Metro zones for league play.
The Spirits, of Sturgeon Composite, have experienced great successes in inter-school athletics at the city, provincial, and inter-provincial level. Our Student-Athletes have won numerous provincial championships, zone championships, and League championships.
Sturgeon Composite High School is one of the largest rural high schools in the province. Students travel from Edmonton, St. Albert, River Que Barre, Bon Accord, Gibbons, Redwater, Morinville, Namao, Lancaster Park and the many other beautiful communities that make up Sturgeon County.
Our Student-Athletes have access to various playing fields, a 420 M oval track, a great deal of outdoor space, tennis courts, ball diamond, and the convenient use of nearby outdoor skating rinks. We also have many phenomenal athletics facilities all a short drive away.
In addition, the school has a large competition gymnasium that can be subdivided into two smaller units and a north gymnasium so that all types of team sports and instructional groups can be accommodated. Our fitness centre is located on the upper level above our south gymnasium. The modernized space allows for a full range of equipment for staff and student use. It also has a more than adequate amount of floor space for a wide variety of functional training as well as a cardio training space that oversees the gymnasium.
Sturgeon Composite offers a wide variety of sports for our entire student body to get involved in. Engagement and opportunity are the pillars of our athletic departments mission. We believe that students should not only have the ability to participate in the more "traditional" school sports but also have the opportunity to participate in the unconventional and "newer" offerings to high school athletics. Due to the overlap of many of our seasons, it is our hope that students find "their" sport; perhaps it is something they have experienced before, or maybe it is a new found love. Whatever it is, we strive to provide as many opportunities as possible for our student body!
Philosophy
To provide an athletic program that acts as an extension of the educational experience at Sturgeon Composite High School. Our Athletics programs will encourage our student athletes to develop not only sports specific skills but also life skills in the areas of leadership and character development, which in turn will provide them the opportunity to achieve a high quality education; promoting university and career readiness. Our student athlete's will also be encouraged to have a positive impact on their community. Volunterism and giving back to the communities that have given so much to us is very important. We hope to engrain that sense of community engagement and belongingness to all our student athletes. Most importantly our athletics programs will strive to teach our student athletes physical and mental skills, self discipline, and sportsmanship while motivating them to strive for excellence over their high school career.
The HIGH SCHOOL Athletic Experience is a highly competitive, very selective program that strives to prepare participants for the rigors of play in the ACAC and USPORT levels, while continuing to cultivate the personal skills of leadership, commitment, competitiveness, time management, personal sacrifice, and the appreciation for the unique skills of the individual. Cuts are made at the high school level; students are selected for teams based upon skill, and programs include a JR (or JV) subdivision when possible. In addition to skill, selection is also determined by the demonstrated ability to apply team strategy and concepts, coachability, and sportsmanship. Student-athlete attendance at all pre-season and in-season practices, as well as games and tournaments, is required.
SPORTSMANSHIP
The mission of Sturgeon Athletics is to promote fun, health, competition, and athleticism through sportsmanship and fair play. Although competition may become intense, we expect our coaches, athletes, staff, parents, and spectators to maintain good sportsmanship up to and after the final whistle. Sports are filled with judgment calls and, as a result, disputes between players, opponents, and staff may occur from time to time. However, it is important that participants respect and handle all disputes that may occur in a civilized manner.
OPPORTUNITY
Sturgeon Athletics believes in offering extracurricular athletic participation opportunities to as many of its students as possible, striving for broad participation and competitive excellence, encouraging sportsmanship and ethical conduct, and developing social attitudes in all of its athletic endeavors, scheduling the majority of its athletic competition with other members of Edmonton Metro, and recognize the dual objectives in an educational athletics program of balancing both the students academic needs and athletic requirements to maintain a competitive program.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Being a student-athlete isn't just about juggling practices, games, and classes; it's a lifestyle that demands dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to personal growth. The journey of a student-athlete is one filled with challenges and triumphs, and it's in this journey that character development flourishes.
